Job summary

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) at the HOpe Centre, North Vancouver, BC, seeks a Concurrent Disorders Nurse (RN/RPN) to provide care to clients with moderate to severe substance use issues, including co-occurring mental health disorders, within a comprehensive service system.

In a client- and family-centred model, the role is delivered through an interdisciplinary team, aligning with BC professional standards and ethics, with flexible hours as needed by operations and collective agreements.

Qualifications

  • Current practicing registration as RN or RPN with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two years' recent nursing experience in the related area (e.g. community mental health, substance use intervention).
  • Knowledge of substance abuse and addictions treatment and of mental illness and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide concurrent nursing care to clients with moderate to severe substance use issues.
  • Work within an interdisciplinary team as part of an integrated system.
  • Adhere to BCCNM standards and the Code of Ethics for registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses.

Job description

Concurrent Disorders Nurse (RN/RPN) - Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) at the HOpe Centre, North Vancouver, BC

Within the context of a client and family-centred care model and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of professional practice and Code of Ethics for registered nurses or registered psychiatric nurses and the established vision and values of the organization, under the direction of the Manager, provides concurrent nursing care to clients who have moderate to severe substance use issues which may include co-occurring mental health disorders. This care is provided as part of a comprehensive substance use and mental health system of services.

The Concurrent Disorders Nurse works within the parameters of an interdisciplinary team and as part of a broader integrated system to deliver these services.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.

Education & Experience
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two (2) years' recent, related nursing experience in the related area (e.g. Community mental health, substance use intervention, mental health housing), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client and family centred model of care.
  • Knowledge of the BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice.
  • Knowledge of evidence based nursing practice related to substance abuse treatment.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and treatment.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse and addictions treatment.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects).
  • Knowledge of counseling skills and group facilitation skills.
  • Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care.
  • Knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing. and deal effectively with co-workers, physicians, other health care staff, patients and their families, and outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop educational programs and materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.Demonstrated ability to deal with and/or guide others in resolution of conflict issues.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to geriatric mental health.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR and NRP techniques.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment, and in the techniques appropriate for treatment.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
