Job summary

Matrix HR is seeking an experienced Concrete Foreman for an established Edmonton-area contractor. You will lead crews performing structural concrete, flatwork, foundations, and equipment pads, while actively participating in field activities.

The role requires hands-on leadership, safety focus, and ability to travel to various Edmonton-area project sites. A Red Seal or equivalent is preferred, with Class 5 driving privileges.

Matrix HR is recruiting an experienced Concrete Foreman / Working Foreman on behalf of an established Commercial-Industrial Concrete Contractor for ongoing concrete projects throughout the Edmonton area!

This is a hands‑on leadership role responsible for leading crews completing structural concrete, flatwork, foundations, equipment pads, grade beams, formwork, and related concrete scopes. The successful candidate will provide daily crew leadership while remaining actively involved in field activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to quality standards.

This position is based in Edmonton, Alberta, with travel required to various client project sites throughout the Edmonton area.

Key Responsibilities

The Concrete Foreman will lead a crew performing commercial‑industrial flatwork and structural concrete work. The role will plan and sequence daily activities, allocate labour and equipment, coordinate materials, interpret drawings, manage formwork and pre‑pour readiness, maintain production targets, and ensure work meets project specifications, quality expectations, and safety requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead and coordinate daily activities for concrete crews, including assigning tasks, providing direction, and monitoring productivity.
  • Provide hands‑on leadership while actively participating in concrete construction activities.
  • Plan daily work activities based on project schedules, drawings, specifications, labour availability, equipment, and material requirements.
  • Read and interpret structural, civil, and concrete drawings to support accurate execution of work.
  • Coordinate and support concrete formwork activities, including layout, setup, bracing, stripping, and quality checks.
  • Support structural concrete and flatwork scopes, including foundations, slabs, equipment pads, grade beams, walls, or similar concrete work.
  • Ensure pre‑pour readiness, including coordination of forms, elevations, embeds, anchor bolts, rebar interfaces, and inspection requirements.
  • Monitor quality of workmanship and ensure completed work meets project requirements and specifications.
  • Assign labour and equipment effectively to maintain productivity and project schedules.
  • Coordinate with site supervision, project managers, inspectors, suppliers, and other trades to support project execution.
  • Conduct daily safety discussions, toolbox meetings, hazard assessments, and support site safety requirements.
  • Promote safe work practices and ensure compliance with client and site safety procedures.
  • Manage crew performance, provide coaching and direction, and support a positive team environment.
  • Communicate progress, constraints, labour requirements, material needs, and field issues to site leadership.
  • Identify and elevate safety, quality, staffing, equipment, material, and schedule concerns before they impact project delivery.
  • Support daily reporting, production tracking, Client coordination, and progress updates where required.

This is a working foreman position, not an office‑only supervisory role. The successful candidate will actively work alongside the crew and support field activities as required.

What You Bring
  • Proven experience as a Concrete Foreman, Working Foreman, Lead Hand, Senior Concrete Carpenter, or similar leadership role.
  • Strong background in commercial, industrial, civil, or structural concrete construction.
  • Experience leading crews completing concrete formwork, structural concrete, flatwork, foundations, slabs, equipment pads, grade beams, walls, or similar concrete scopes.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural, civil, and concrete drawings, specifications, and field instructions.
  • Experience planning daily work activities, coordinating crews, and maintaining production targets.
  • Strong safety leadership skills, including hazard identification, toolbox meetings, and site safety compliance.
  • Ability to coordinate with project teams, inspectors, suppliers, and other trades.
  • Strong commitment to quality workmanship, productivity, and safe work practices.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel to various Edmonton‑area project sites.
  • Ability to complete client site‑access requirements, including drug and alcohol testing where required.
Assets
  • Red Seal Journeyperson Carpenter certification or equivalent concrete‑formwork experience.
  • Previous experience on industrial, energy, plant‑site, civil, or Alberta Industrial Heartland projects.
  • Experience with engineered formwork systems such as Doka, Peri, Aluma, Duraform, or similar.
  • Experience working on large‑scale commercial or industrial concrete projects.
  • Experience managing larger crews or multiple work fronts.
  • Experience with Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), quality documentation, inspections, and daily production reporting.
  • NCSO, supervisor training, leadership certifications, or construction safety training.
  • CSTS 2020, First Aid, WHMIS, H2S Alive, Ground Disturbance, or other current site‑required safety tickets.
