Job description
Come work alongside technology visionaries and research scientists to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. The Cameras Architecture Team is looking for an Imaging Simulation Engineer, who has extended experience in leading imaging technology, algorithm development and evaluation, to help develop, validate, and execute end‑to‑end simulation for camera systems consisting of image sensor, optics, control algorithms, and application software for the study and validation of new camera technologies and drive future product camera architectures that meet Meta’s product vision. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experiences with lab equipment and familiar with camera test methodologies.
Responsibilities
- Develop, validate, and execute state‑of‑the‑art imaging software simulation tools to enable client camera HW explorations, machine learning dataset generation, and product architecture tasks for consumer products.
- Investigate latest imaging simulation methods (e.g. ISET, ZEMAX, non‑sequential ray tracing) to enable realistic simulation of real camera behavior for architecture, algorithms, and image quality development for consumer mobile products.
- Experiment and data collection to validate simulator accuracy and to improve simulator modeling capability and efficiency.
- Build and bring up lab setups for image data acquisition of camera prototypes to support camera design studies. Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance of lab equipment.
- Develop and document camera test methodologies to support 2D/3D camera system performance analysis.
- Develop and debug test scripts for image data collection automation.
- Processing, analysis and organizing measurement data; presentation of initial analysis.
- Drive supplier interaction and management to deliver camera prototypes in support of concept demonstrations.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Advanced degree (M.S.) or equivalent acquired experience in a discipline such as Imaging Science, Image Processing, Computer Vision, or related fields.
- Knowledge of image formation process (spectrum, optics/aberrations, PSF, sensor noise, Fourier theory, sampling/aliasing) needed to successfully model and simulate complex imaging phenomena.
- Experience and knowledge in developing and tuning Image Signal Processing (ISP) algorithms and pipeline.
- Experience coding in languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, preferably CUDA, design code for efficiency, and target different platforms such as GPU, Cloud, and other.
- Experiences in image quality testing of camera systems and familiar with image quality metrics and analysis.
- Hands‑on experience in the development of lab setups for camera system performance study.
- Experiences in camera calibration and modeling of imaging systems.
- Familiar with image sensor, imaging optics, and image processing algorithms.
- Ability to work with minimal direction and manage a project independently from start to finish.
Must-Have Skills
- Understanding of image formation, capturing, and processing pipeline and techniques.
- Python/Matlab programming, shell scripting skills.
- Understanding of subjective and objective image quality evaluation metric and testing procedure.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Hands on experience in the development of lab setups for camera system performance study.
- Experiences in camera calibration and modeling of imaging systems.
- Candidates that come from Google or Apple.
Years of Experience
10+ years of experience.
Degrees/Certifications Required
Bachelor’s required, Master’s or Ph.D. preferred.
Key Projects / Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Collaborate with camera architects and XFN teams such as systems, optics, algorithm development and IQ team, to execute, validate and improve camera simulation for purposes like architecture validation and component down‑selection.
Build a software simulator to simulate the hardware before it’s available, applicable to all products with cameras.
Purpose / Size of this team & Where does this position fit within the team?
A small team working on developing end‑to‑end high‑fidelity, high‑accuracy, and photo‑realism camera simulator. This position will be the key person working with XFN teams to fulfill their simulation needs.
Performance Measurement
- Ability to work independently and deliver result on time.
- Ability to understand complex issues and provide analysis, recommendation, and solutions.
- Ability to present ideas, communicate and collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
Compelling Story & Candidate Value Proposition
- Opportunity to understand, validate and influence the whole camera system architecture.
- Working on a very important sub‑system of the latest and greatest AR/VR products.
- Opportunity to gain broad system‑level knowledge but also deep dive into certain areas.
- Opportunity to develop and incorporate new technology into the system.
Candidate Disqualifiers
Candidates that jump around a lot are not ideal, need to focus on longer term.
Difficult Aspects of Job
Cross‑functional collaboration with other teams.
