Job summary

Manulife/John Hancock in Toronto seeks a Compliance Consultant to support our Canada Retirement business, interpreting pension and investment regulatory requirements across Canada and applying them to inquiries, projects and initiatives.

You will own regulatory analysis, contract reviews, marketing-material reviews, and guidance on legislative changes, collaborating with multiple partners in an agile, risk-aware environment.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of compliance experience.
  • Life insurance and pension product knowledge.
  • Understanding regulatory requirements and applying them to products and initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the compliance lead on digital transformation initiatives, providing guidance on legislative requirements and reviewing controls to mitigate regulatory risk.
  • Analyze legislative and regulatory changes, assess business impacts, and provide guidance to ensure timely implementation and compliance.
  • Act as SME with respect to regulatory requirements impacting Canada Retirement, including responding to inquiries.
  • Review external communications and marketing materials for regulatory compliance.
  • Review contracts and templates to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Review regulatory documentation (specimen plans, plan texts, CRA forms) for compliance.
  • Review RFPs for regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain legislative tools to guide business partners on applicable requirements.
  • Provide training on legislative requirements and regulatory compliance concepts.
  • Assist with quarterly and ad hoc reporting; maintain internal compliance policies.

Job description

The Compliance Consultant provides compliance support to our Canada Retirement business. Canada Retirement forms part of Manulife’s Canadian Wealth and Asset Management business, which forms part of its Global Wealth and Asset Management business.

The individual in this role is a self-starter who is responsible for understanding and interpreting applicable legislation, including the pension and investment regulatory landscape across Canada. The successful candidate will also be able to apply legislation to business inquiries, projects and various other initiatives, identifying risks and potential controls, completing regulatory analysis and interpretation, providing contract review and support, including customized requests, assessments of regulatory changes and facilitating implementation, review of marketing material, as well as other regulatory compliance functions as may be required from time to time.

The individual in this role takes ownership of their tasks and works well in a small team environment and is a strong communicator with various levels of the organization. They must have experience in a compliance/legal/controls environment, knowledge of risk framework, understand industry issues and be able to quickly develop balanced solutions that meet both compliance and business requirements in respect of products offered. This individual will be expected to interact with various other departments within Manulife, including business partners, management, legal counsel and compliance partners in other areas, such as Group Benefits, Affinity, Retail, and the Bank.

Position Responsibilities
  • Act as the compliance lead on digital transformation initiatives providing guidance on technical legislative requirements and reviewing controls to mitigate regulatory risk
  • Analyze legislative and regulatory changes, assess business impacts, and provide guidance to ensure timely implementation and compliance. Respond to complex questions from our business partners and provide timely and creative solutions that address the needs of both the business and regulatory requirements
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert with respect to the legislative and regulatory requirements impacting Canada Retirement including responding to regulatory inquiries, as needed
  • Review external communications and marketing materials for compliance with regulatory and policy requirements
  • Review contracts and contractual templates to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Review of regulatory documentation, including specimen plans, plan texts, Canada Revenue Agency forms and other related materials to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Review requests for proposals (RFPs) for compliance with regulatory and policy requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain legislative tools to guide and inform our business partners of applicable requirements
  • Provide training to our business partners regarding legislative requirements and regulatory compliance management concepts
  • Assist with quarterly and ad hoc reporting, as required
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain internal compliance department policies and procedures
Required Qualifications
  • Compliance for a minimum of 3-5 years
  • Life insurance industry and pension related products
  • Understanding complex regulatory requirements and their application to business products and initiatives
  • Regulatory compliance management and issues management
  • Providing compliance support on technical inquiries and questions, projects, and other initiatives, including identifying risks, controls, and possible solutions to mitigate risks
  • Ability to think critically through complex problems and scenarios
  • Working independently in a small team environment
  • Working in an agile environment and providing guidance based on quick turnaround times
  • Contractual reviews and developing and/or amending contractual templates
  • Detailed legislative analysis, interpretation, and implementation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Investment experience would be considered an asset
  • Technical/digital experience would be considered an asset
  • Bilingual in English and French would be considered an asset

Salary range is expected to be between

$73,725.00 CAD - $122,875.00 CAD
