Job summary

Fraser Health Authority in New Westminster, BC, is seeking a Health Care Assistant to support the care team in acute department settings. You will assist with personal care, meals, mobility, and documentation, following care plans and nursing directions.

Strong communication and physical endurance are essential to provide safe, person-centered care. Registration with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry and a Health Care Assistant program are required.

Qualifications

• Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Registration with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry.
• Current Food Safe Level One, as required.

Responsibilities

• Provides personal care to patients including toileting, bathing, skin and hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, bed changes, positioning and mobilization.
• Observes and reports patient progress and reactions to care to the nurse.
• Assists patients with meals; ensures dietary restrictions and serves/cleans trays.
• Measures vital signs and collects non-sterile specimens as directed; reports issues to the nurse.
• Documents activities of daily living and observations in patient charts per procedures.
• Transports patients using wheelchairs, lifts, or stretchers; aids admissions, discharges and transfers.
• Sets up charts for new patients and attaches documents as directed by the nurse.
• Performs related duties such as answering phones, stocking supplies, cleaning equipment, and maintaining patient areas.
• Attends committees, meetings, and training sessions as assigned.
