Job summary

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre in Cobourg is seeking a full-time Community Services Counsellor (35 hours per week). The role provides professional individual and group counselling, advocacy and referrals to women who have experienced gender-based violence, delivering services with compassion and a trauma-informed approach.

The Counsellor conducts intake assessments, safety planning, crisis support, and facilitates psychoeducational groups, while documenting outcomes and supporting

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience, including at least 1 year counselling.
  • Understanding of family violence, trauma, addictions, and mental health.
  • Knowledge of Motivational Interviewing and trauma-informed care.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments to determine clients’ needs within the Counselling program.
  • Provide immediate crisis support and safety planning.
  • Coordinate and facilitate psychoeducational groups for women who have experienced gender-based violence.
  • Work collaboratively with women to identify, develop, and fulfill their goals.
  • Create service plans and support women in achieving their goals within their service plans.
  • Document and maintain accurate service statistics and client files.
  • Assist with client accompaniments to court, police, hospitals, etc., when appropriate.

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is an accredited violence against women agency working to end gender-based violence by providing accessible, compassionate, and best-practice- modeled programs and services inclusive of shelter, counselling, housing support, and prevention through a support system that inspires hope, creates safety, and fosters resilience. Our services provide a range of options and entry points, helping women gain the right kind of support at the right time in their journey. The Role

We have an exciting opportunity within our Community Services team for a full-time (35 hours) Community Services Counsellor. The Community Services Counsellor is responsible for providing professional individual and group counselling, advocacy and referral services to women who have experienced gender-based violence.The Counsellor will demonstrate a commitment to the provision of excellent client services through following established best practices and embracing the mission, vision and values of the agency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct preliminary intake assessments to determine clients’ needs within the Counselling program
  • Complete safety assessments and explore safety planning strategies with counselling clients
  • Provide immediate crisis support, when needed
  • Co-ordinate and facilitate psychoeducational groups for women who have experienced gender-based violence
  • W ork collaboratively with women to identify, develop, and fulfill their goals
  • Create service plans and support women in achieving the goals within their service plans
  • Use appropriate counselling skills and modalities to support clients
  • Facilitating client accompaniments to court, police, hospitals, etc., where appropriate and when possible
  • Collecting and maintaining accurate service statistics, and maintaining appropriate and accurate file documentation
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience preferred, with at least 1 year counselling experience
  • Understanding of issues related to family violence, including a strong understanding of the links between violence, trauma, addictions and mental health
  • Knowledge of the following frameworks: Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Family and Intimate Partner Violence within a gendered lens, and Trauma informed
  • Basic First Aid and CPR certification
