Job description

COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER |Remote, moving to In-Office in Edmonton in 2027| Temporary Part-Time 21 hours per week| 6 Month Position

About Our Client Our client is a well-established, member-driven professional association in Alberta. It has served its members for decades and is a respected voice for the profession it represents. The organization advocates for its members and supports their professional practice. It has been recognized several years running as one of Alberta's Top Employers, and its people are known for being collaborative, principled and committed to the members they serve.

This temporary role is a chance to shape how a large, engaged membership hears about the issues that matter to them. You'll be at the centre of the organization's social media presence during busy and important periods, and your work will have a direct, visible impact.

The role is remote for now but will move to the organization's Edmonton office in 2027, so candidates must be able to work on-site in west Edmonton for the rest of the contract. At 21 hours a week, it's a meaningful contract that still leaves room for other commitments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Social Media Strategy and Management Manage the organization's social media presence across platforms and set the direction for upcoming campaigns. Develop and implement social media strategies that drive member engagement around major organizational events and initiatives. Support the organization's LinkedIn presence, including thought leadership content. Develop social media guidelines and strategies for staff, leaders and member groups to use.
  • Content Creation Plan, write, edit and create engaging content for social channels, with priority on campaigns and emerging issues. Produce quick, engaging visual content, including photography, graphics and short videos. Write news articles for the organization's member publication and take photographs at events as required.
  • Monitoring, Analytics and Issues Management Monitor social media analytics and use the results to improve content and guide future campaigns. Watch communication channels for misleading, inaccurate or harmful information about the organization, its members or the sector it serves. Develop proactive communication plans so key messages stay clear, accurate and effective.
  • Team Support and Collaboration Work closely with the Communications Manager and the wider communications team to improve how the organization reaches internal and external audiences. Provide backup to other Communications Officers and support meetings, committees, conferences and other departmental activities as needed.
Qualifications
  • Education & Experience: A diploma in communications, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of communications experience, including at least one year in a social media role (equivalencies will be considered). Experience in a member-driven association is an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Experience writing for multiple social media platforms, including X, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Comfort working with public-facing websites, SharePoint and Microsoft Teams. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva and related design tools. A solid understanding of copyright and privacy legislation. Experience with NationBuilder and a working knowledge of basic HTML are assets.
  • Key Competencies: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including inclusive language for diverse audiences. A good read on current trends in digital and social media. Strong organization and project management skills, with close attention to detail. Diplomacy, tact and sound judgement when working with internal and external stakeholders. Flexibility to work irregular hours when urgent communication needs come up. Written and spoken French is an asset.
