Communications Coordinator

LOCATION: Halifax, NS
START DATE: January 26, 2026
HOURS OF WORK: Approximately 35 hours per week (Full-time, permanent position)
REMUNERATION: Starting Rate $46.25 Competitive salary, RRSP and benefits in accordance with the Collective Agreement

About the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour

The Nova Scotia Federation of Labour is the central provincial voice for Nova Scotia workers. The Federation represents thousands of union members, lobbying the provincial government for justice and fairness for workers across the province.

Summary of the Position

This position is based in the Halifax Regional Municipality and is a front-facing position, reporting directly to the President. The successful candidate has excellent writing skills and can deliver communications products such as speeches, press releases, website content, and written submissions to the provincial government. The successful candidate will work with the elected officers of the Federation to ensure the implementation of campaign work and the implementation of the strategic plan. This is a unionized position, with all salary and benefits outlined in the Collective Agreement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Government Relations: Preparation of briefing notes, talking points and backgrounders to lobby the provincial government
  • Media Relations: including timely responses to media inquiries, coordination of media interviews, and organizing media events
  • Digital Communications: updating website content, creating digital petitions, and updating the Federation's social media channels
  • Administrative Support: Managing schedules, coordinating meetings, minute taking and setting up appointments to keep workflows organized and meet deadlines
  • Event Support: Support event planning and logistics, including the biennial convention (registration, credentials, payments, vendor tables, caucus meetings, etc.).
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary diploma or university degree in a relevant field (i.e. Journalism, Communications, Public Relations) or 5 years + of relevant work experience in a trade union or comparable communications role;
  • Excellent written, spoken, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Understanding of, or experience with a trade union, and labour‑based campaigns;
  • Proven experience with social media, media relations, and issues management;
  • Effective time management, and ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
  • Experience with websites, and creating engaging social media posts;
  • Experience with Action Network toolkit is an asset
  • Commitment to social justice, workers' rights, and the labour movement.
  • Occasional weekend work required
