Job description

ROLE

The Communications Advisor manages company news on internal and external channels across our North American operations. The Advisor handles each story from start to finish: finding it, writing and editing it, and getting it approved. Stories cover our project work, capabilities, company values, employee recognition and commitment to assured delivery. Current channels include a weekly mini-newsletter, LinkedIn posts and a corporate magazine published twice a year. These channels, and how often we publish on them, may change as company needs change. The role calls for strong writing and editing skills, careful management of approvals and records, and a good sense of what makes a story newsworthy. Above all, the Communications Advisor presents the company accurately and consistently to employees, clients and the public, and protects and strengthens the company's reputation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Align the corporate story with the company's objectives, targets and strategy, under the direction of the Manager, Marketing & Communications.
  • Meet regularly with key stakeholders across business units in Canada and the US to find newsworthy stories.
  • Track project lifecycles and upcoming milestones so project news is covered at the right time and on the right channels.
  • Stay informed on core teams' improvements and employee services and share those updates on internal channels.
  • Tailor each story to its audience and channel while following the company's writing style and tone
  • Oversee the publication of content on all channels.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with clients' corporate communications teams and get client approval for any external story that mentions a client.
  • Develop success metrics for each channel, report results every quarter and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinate the monthly all-staff meeting, including leading dry runs with presenters and making sure the PowerPoint deck is properly formatted.
  • Support company events by planning and organizing behind the scenes, or by attending as a company representative.
  • Help manage the company photobank, including occasionally taking project photos and uploading, coding and archiving images.
  • Write and edit documents for other teams, including bid submissions, so outgoing language is consistent and polished.
  • Write marketing materials and website content for both organizations.
  • Support the Marketing team and help with other team priorities as needed.

Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications

  • Experience writing for the energy sector is a strong asset.
  • Experience serving multiple clients with competing deadlines, following strict internal processes so content is approved by every required party.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Expert writer and editor with a strong command of grammar, punctuation, tone, voice and tense (the company follows the CP Style Guide, with minor exceptions).
  • Strong understanding of what makes a story newsworthy and how to adapt it for different audiences and channels.
  • Able to manage a long, demanding approval process until every party has signed off.
  • Keeps careful formal records of meetings and approvals for governance.
  • Advanced knowledge of social media platforms and management tools (e.g., LinkedIn, Hootsuite).
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Working knowledge of website design and analytics tools.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the construction and energy sector is an asset.
