Job summary

Weir Marine Engineering / NETE in Halifax, NS is seeking a Combat Systems Specialist (Engineer or Technologist) with current or former naval combat systems experience to join our NETE Combat System Material State Validation Team. You will lead shipboard surveys, document defects against specs, and collaborate with SMEs to resolve systemic issues.

Education includes a Technologist Diploma or higher, with RCN combat systems training highly valued.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of recent experience in industrial or naval maintenance, specifically in inspections and technical reporting.
• Technologist Diploma or higher; degree in Science/Engineering preferred; RCN combat systems training is an asset.
• Ability to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance; Canadian citizenship and 10 years of residence are required.

Responsibilities

• Lead on-site inspections of naval combat systems and identify defects by comparing installations to drawings and specs.
• Translate survey findings into actionable data and record defects in DRMIS with photos and recommended actions.
• Collaborate with SMEs to identify systemic fleet issues and assess if problems recur across the class.
• Support ship work period scheduling and monthly status reporting; potential to become a Task Lead.
• Demonstrate a safety-first mentality and work within zero-harm culture.

Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is seeking a Combat Systems Specialist (Engineer or Technologist) with current or former experience with naval combat systems to join our Naval Engineering Test Establishment (NETE) Combat System Material State Validation Team in Halifax, NS. As a key member of the NETE team, you will provide the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) with the technical baseline regarding the health of combat systems. You will bridge the gap between shipboard reality and engineering oversight, ensuring that technical deviations are identified, documented, and resolved.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead Shipboard Surveys & Technical Investigations: Lead on-site inspections of naval combat systems. You will identify defects and configuration deviations by comparing physical installations against technical drawings and equipment specs.

Technical Reporting: Translate survey findings into actionable data. This includes entering defects into the DND System of Record (DRMIS), attaching photographic evidence, and recommending corrective engineering actions.

Strategic Analysis: Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to identify systemic issues across the fleet. You won’t just report one broken part; you’ll help identify if that part is failing on every ship in the class.

Project Leadership: Assist in scheduling activities around ship ‘work periods’ and availability windows. Manage monthly status reports with the opportunity to transition into a Task Lead role.

Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications:

Field Experience : 6+ years of recent experience in industrial or naval maintenance, specifically in conducting inspections and technical reporting.

Education: A Technologist Diploma, Bachelor or Science or Engineering. We highly value candidates with RCN Combat Systems training and experience such as Naval Technicians with Duty Technician qualifications or Naval Technical Officers who have passed their engineering applications (Phase VI) Board.

Physical Agility : Ability to safely transit RCN vessels, work comfortably at heights (aloft), and conduct physical surveys in a maritime environment.

Tech Savvy : Proficient in capturing data via digital cameras and tablets, and highly competent with MS Office 365.

Technical Standards : Able to provide technical assessments and verify material readiness against RCN engineering standards.

Security & Eligibility : Must obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, which necessitates Canadian citizenship and a minimum of 10 years of continuous residence in Canada

Soft Skills & Assets :

Communication : Strong command of English (written and verbal). Ability to translate technical findings into clear reports. (Bilingualism in French is a major plus).

DRMIS Knowledge : Prior experience with the Defence Resource Management Information System is an asset.

Mindset : You are resourceful, comfortable working under minimal supervision, and possess a “safety-first” mentality.
