Nutrien in Redwater, Alberta is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op student for an 8‑month term starting January 2027 at the Nitrogen Operations site, about 40km NE of Edmonton. This temporary, full‑time role is for students who will return to school after the term.

You will lead design changes for mechanical plant improvements, troubleshoot production units, and support root cause analyses while coordinating with site trades, planners, and engineers.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in Mechanical Engineering; completed at least 2 years.
  • Knowledge of pressure vessels, piping codes, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors; NDT a plus.
  • Strong time-management with ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficient with MS Office; Matlab/CodeCalc or drafting tools a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design changes for mechanical plant improvements (piping, vessels, heat exchangers).
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems in production units.
  • Assist in Root Cause Failure Analyses and follow-up work.
  • Support project work: scope definition, tender docs, contracts support.
  • Assist maintenance engineers with detailed technical evaluations.
  • In-field task support, troubleshooting, and failure analysis.
  • Collaborate with site trades, planners, engineers, inspectors.
  • Analyze maintenance history to prioritize issues and opportunities.
  • Maintain safe work attitude and support zero-incident initiative.

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineering Co-op student to join Nutrien’s Redwater, Alberta Nitrogen Operations (approximately 40km NE of Edmonton) for an 8-month work term beginning January 2027. This temporary, full-time role is open to students who will be returning to school after the co-op term.

Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, planning, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a proven ability to effectively organize, coordinate, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. You will possess exceptional written and verbal communication abilities, enabling them to build strong relationships and convey information clearly and professionally. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills will allow candidates to analyze complex situations, identify effective solutions, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead design changes for mechanical plant improvements. This will include stationary (piping, vessels, heat exchangers) and rotating equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems within the production units
  • Assist in Root Cause Failure Analyses and lead follow-up work
  • Contribute to project work encompassing scope definition, tender document creation and ongoing support of contracts
  • Assist maintenance engineers in detailed technical evaluations
  • Preform in field task support, troubleshooting, and failure analysis
  • Work with site trades groups, planners, engineers, and inspectors
  • Analyze maintenance history and failure data to prioritize issues and opportunities
  • Demonstrate a safe work attitude and support our commitment to zero initiative
What You’ll Bring
  • Currently enrolled and completed at least 2 years of an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering required
  • Knowledge of pressure vessels, piping codes, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and NDT inspections is an asset
  • Demonstrated time management skills to meet deadlinges as well as flexibility to adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent computer skills including:
    • standard Microsoft Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
    • calculations software (Matlab, CodeCalc) is an asset
    • drafting/sketching software experience is an asset
