Job summary

L3Harris Technologies is seeking a 12-month CNC Optical Technician Co-op in Don Mills/Toronto, Ontario. The program runs January 2027 through December 2027, focusing on generating and polishing precision lenses using 3–5 axis CNC equipment.

You will inspect components, support process improvements, and collaborate with a team in a defense tech environment. Enrolled students in Photonics or Mechanical Engineering Technology will contribute to precision optics manufacturing and gain hands-on

Qualifications

• Student enrolled in Photonics or Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings.
• Strong technical knowledge and capabilities.

Responsibilities

• Set up CNC programs and CAN cycles with G-code understanding.
• Grind optical components using Precision Optics CNC.
• Edge and polish optical components with Precision Optics CNC and Diamond Turning CNC.
• Fabricate aspheric components on Diamond Turning lathes and alignment stations.
• Inspect and measure components to meet tolerances (PV, RMS, AST).
• Contribute to development of new manufacturing processes.
• Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.

About The Role

Attention Technology College Students seeking 12 month co-op opportunities! We're seeking bright and motivated students to join our team on co-op work terms for 2027. Our College Co-op program students start January, 2027 and work until the end of December.

This position is responsible for generating and polishing optical components (precision lenses) using CNC machines with 3, 4, and 5 axis; NC; 2 axis and 2 mechanical axis equipment. Also may perform final inspection of complicated optical elements.

Primary Responsibilities

• Set up CNC programs; CAN cycles with G-code understandings
• Grind optical components; Precision Optics CNC
• Edge optical components; Precision Optics CNC
• Polish optical components; both Precision Optics CNC and Diamond Turned CNC
• Aspheric optical components; Diamond Turning lathes, Alignment Turning Stations
• Inspect/measure optical components to ensure conformity to specified tolerances
• Achieving surface form requirements (PV, RMS, AST)
• Perform complicated maintenance, repair & troubleshooting of equipment
• Support the development of new manufacturing processes and make improvements to current manufacturing processes

Education & Skills Requirements

• Enrolled in Photonics or Mechanical Engineering Technology, based technician/ technologist diploma program
• Ability to read and interpret drawings
• Strong technical knowledge, capabilities
• Understanding of principles of physics and chemistry
• Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
• Ability to safely handle delicate optical parts
• Ability to work well with others
• Ability to comprehend and follow detailed instructions
• Ability to read detailed drawings
• Ability to effectively operate complicated equipment such as Precision Optics and Diamond Turned CNC and associated equipment
• This posting is for a current vacancy. In the province of Ontario, Canada, the pay range for this position will be $23-24/hr.
