Job summary

Strathcona Resources Ltd. in Calgary, Alberta, is seeking a Closure Technician to lead and support closure programs, including abandonment, decommissioning, and site closure activities.

Qualifications

  • Experience in oil & gas with closure, abandonment, decommissioning, reclamation, or asset retirement obligations.
  • Proficient with Wellview, Siteview, Smartsheet, Execute, Abadata and MS Office, with ability to adapt to new software.
  • Familiarity with mapping and GIS software.
  • Demonstrated experience working with regulatory requirements in Western Canada (Alberta, BC, or Saskatchewan).
  • Understanding of environmental management theories and industry practices will be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Support planning and execution of well abandonments, decommissioning, and reclamation projects with scheduling and priority alignment.
  • Manage the inactive well inventory program to identify closure candidates and support inspections and compliance.
  • Collaborate with land brokers and stakeholders to secure third-party agreements for closure activities.
  • Conduct well file reviews to inform program design, regulatory strategy, and execution plans.
  • Develop and review AFEs to ensure cost control, budget alignment, and financial accountability.
  • Manage and validate WellView, SiteView, and corporate systems (StackDx, ClearOps, SiteScan) for accurate tracking.
  • Maintain audit-ready documentation to support regulatory compliance and internal reporting.
  • Provide field support during operations to enable effective decision-making and issue resolution.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory applications; oversee end-of-well reporting across Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations, legislation, and HSE standards to mitigate risk.
  • Identify operational gaps and lead continuous improvement for efficiency and consistency.
  • Ensure accuracy of Asset Retirement Obligation data based on program planning.

We are currently seeking a Closure Technician to join our team in Calgary. Reporting to the Team Lead, Closure, the Closure Technician is responsible for leading and supporting the planning, coordination, execution, and regulatory reporting of closure related programs. This role acts as a central coordination point between operations, the business units, surface land, environmental, regulatory bodies, and third-party service providers, ensuring efficient delivery of well abandonments, decommissioning, and site closure activities.

Responsibilities
  • Support the planning and execution of well abandonments, decommissioning, and reclamation projects, ensuring alignment across scheduling, vendors, and operational priorities
  • Manage the corporate inactive well inventory program to identify closure candidates and support inspection, suspension, and compliance program optimization
  • Collaborate with land brokers and stakeholders to facilitate acquisition of third‑party agreements required to progress closure activities
  • Conduct well file reviews to inform program design, regulatory strategy, and execution plans
  • Develop and review AFEs to ensuring cost control, budget alignment, and financial accountability across closure programs
  • Manage and validate WellView, SiteView, and corporate systems (StackDx, ClearOps, SiteScan), ensuring accurate project tracking and reporting
  • Maintain high quality, audit‑ready documentation to support regulatory compliance and internal reporting requirements
  • Provide field support during operations, enabling effective decision‑making and issue resolution
  • Manage the preparation and submission of regulatory applications and oversee the timely, accurate completion of end‑of‑well reporting across Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan
  • Manage compliance with all applicable regulations, legislation, and HSE standards, proactively mitigating risk
  • Identify operational gaps and lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, consistency, and program performance
  • Ensure accuracy of Asset Retirement Obligation data based on program planning
Requirements
  • Experience in oil & gas with direct exposure to closure, abandonment, decommissioning, reclamation, or asset retirement obligations.
  • Excellent computer skills, experience with Wellview, Siteview, Smartsheet, Execute, Abadata, MS Office and the ability to adapt to new software
  • Familiarity with mapping and GIS software
  • Demonstrated experience working with regulatory requirements in Western Canada (Alberta, British Columbia, and/or Saskatchewan), including application preparation and reporting
  • Understanding of environmental management theories, methodologies, and industry practices would be an asset
