Job summary

University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto General Hospital seeks a Clinical Research Study Assistant to support autonomic function studies in cardiac patients. Under supervision, you will assist with study coordination, data collection, venipuncture, and ECG recordings per GCP and study protocols.

You will help with regulatory documentation, source data, and participant interaction, in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team within a 1-year temporary full-time contract.

Qualifications

• Community college diploma in a health-related discipline or equivalent.
• 3–6 months of related experience; clinical research experience preferred.
• Phlebotomy training and competency required; phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Experience with ECG acquisition and obtaining high-quality ECG recordings preferred.
• Experience with processing, handling, and storage of biological specimens is an asset.
• GCP knowledge is an asset.
• Strong organizational and time management skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Able to interact professionally with research participants.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; REDCap experience an asset.
• Must complete UHN training and competency requirements.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

The Clinical Research Study Assistant will support clinical research studies evaluating autonomic function and non-invasive neuromodulation in patients with cardiac arrhythmias and autonomic disorders. Working under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and research team, the incumbent will assist in study coordination, participant interaction, data collection, and regulatory compliance and will perform study-specific procedures including venipuncture/phlebotomy, processing of research blood samples, and electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings in accordance with approved study protocols, UHN policies, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines

Duties

• Assist with screening and recruitment of study participants
• Schedule study visits and maintain participant communication
• Support informed consent process under supervision
• Perform venipuncture/phlebotomy for collection of research blood samples in accordance with approved study protocols and UHN requirements
• Assist with processing, labelling, storage, and preparation of research blood samples/specimens according to established study procedures
• Acquire high-quality resting ECG recordings (approximately 5-10 minutes) according to standardized research protocols for subsequent heart-rate variability (HRV), P-wave alternans, and other ECG-based analyses
• Measure and document vital signs and other study-specific physiological measurements, as required
• Collect study data (questionnaires, vitals, device logs, diaries)
• Maintain accurate source documentation and case report forms
• Assist with REB submissions and regulatory documentation
• Track and document adverse events and protocol deviations
• Manage study files and maintain data confidentiality
• Coordinate with clinical staff and research team members

• Community college diploma in a health-related discipline, or equivalent
• 3-6 months of related experience; clinical research experience preferred
• Previous training and demonstrated competency in venipuncture/phlebotomy required; experience performing phlebotomy in a clinical or research setting strongly preferred
• Experience performing ECG acquisition and obtaining high-quality ECG recordings is strongly preferred; training in study-specific ECG acquisition protocols will be provided as required
• Experience with processing, handling, and storage of biological specimens is an asset
• Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and research ethics is an asset
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to interact professionally and sensitively with research participants
• Ability to follow detailed study protocols and perform standardized research procedures accurately and consistently
• Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Experience with REDCap or clinical databases is an asset
• The successful candidate will be required to complete applicable UHN training and competency requirements before independently performing study-specific procedures.
