Job summary

IWK Health in Halifax is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Birth Unit within the Women’s & Newborn Health Program. The expert RN will promote excellent care, lead in practice changes, and mentor colleagues in evidence-based methods.

The role supports collaboration with an interprofessional team, joint appointments with Dalhousie University, and care across HI, VG, and related sites. A 12-month, 100% FTE, temporary assignment is offered with competitive hourly compensation.

Qualifications

The Opportunity

Reporting To The Manager Of Birth Unit, The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Will Join Other CNS's In The Women's And Newborn Health Program As An Expert Registered Nurse Who Promotes Excellent Care And Advances Nursing Practice Throughout The Women's And Newborn Health Program

• Providing leadership in nursing and working collaboratively in an interprofessional team environment.
• Integrating the skills and knowledge of advanced practice nursing in a collaborative practice setting leading and mentoring team members in evidence-based practice and quality improvement.
• Working in partnership with professional nurses, other healthcare professionals and community partners to provide holistic patient/family centered-care with an emphasis on the care of vulnerable families.
• Advance nursing practice through knowledge translation
• Functioning as a change agent by challenging current practices and creating an environment of independence and autonomy

The successful candidate will also be eligible for joint appointment with the School of Nursing at Dalhousie University.

This position is primarily based at the IWK Health Centre and Richmond Yard. The successful candidate will also provide patient care through regular visits to the Halifax Infirmary (HI) and Victoria General (VG) sites.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday; 37.5 hours weekly.

Your Qualifications

• Masters of Nursing required (Master degree in progress may be considered)
• Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the Nova Scotia Nursing and Midwife Regulator (NSNMR)
• International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), or willingness to complete within two (2) years, required.
• Advanced theoretical knowledge and extensive clinical expertise in perinatal nursing required.
• Previous Clinical Nurse Specialist experience is preferred.
• Minimum three (3) years clinical experience in perinatal nursing required with five (5) years preferred
• Current successful completion of a Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Basic Life Support Level (BLS)Program within the last 12 months, or successful completion of a BLS Renewal Challenge Certificate, required.
• CNA certification in Perinatal Nursing required or willingness to obtain
• Fetal Health Surveillance certification required or willingness to obtain
• Demonstrated advanced theoretical knowledge in clinical practice, consultation, leadership, education, and research.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze, translate and apply evidence.
• Demonstrated accomplishments as a nurse leader, facilitator, innovator, role model, advocate, coach and change agent.
• Demonstrated advanced communication skills (verbal and written) required.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in cross-cultural situations required.
• Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health and their impact on childbearing families
• Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and to coordinate care of vulnerable families.
