Job Summary

As part of the interdisciplinary team, the Clinical Extern is an unregulated healthcare provider who will be providing patient‑centred care under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an identified Regulated Health Professional (RHP), while taking into account CNO guidance for unregulated care providers.

Qualifications And Experience
  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programs:
    • Registered Nurse (RN) students in an accredited baccalaureate nursing program
    • Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) students in an accredited nursing program
    • Respiratory Therapy students in their 2nd or 3rd year of study in accredited education administered by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists
    • Physiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada
    • Occupational Therapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists
    • Paramedic students in second year of an approved Paramedic Programme
    • Undergraduate Medical students in their final year of a program leading to the MD degree
    • Official school transcript (if invited to interview) to verify enrollment
    • Current Vulnerable Sector Check
    • Current BLS certification
    • Evidence of successful learning experiences in recent clinical placements
Skills And Abilities
  • Practices under direct or indirect supervision of the RHP, following CNO guidance
  • Works with the supervising RHP to ensure required knowledge, skill, and judgment
  • Assists with lifting, turning, transferring, transporting, and ambulating per hospital policy
  • Under supervision, conducts patient assessments, measures vital signs, assists with ambulation and ADLs, completes documentation
  • Completes basic skin care under RHP supervision
  • Assists patients during meals and feeding where necessary
  • Completes and maintains related records and documentation
  • Observes patient assessments and participates as requested
  • Demonstrates excellent assessment, communication, organization, problem‑solving, decision‑making, and critical‑thinking skills
  • Facilitates patient and family‑centred care and establishes therapeutic relationships
  • Complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures fostering a safe and inclusive environment
  • Commits to providing an exceptional experience for patients, family, and staff
Hours of Work

Operations run 24/7. Availability is expected on weekdays, weekends, and all shifts (days, nights, 12‑hour shifts). The role is temporary part‑time with opportunity to work up to full‑time hours based on availability, with a minimum commitment of at least 1 shift per week.
