Job summary

Massey Theatre is seeking two Resident Technicians to support performances, technical planning and equipment maintenance for internal and external activities. They will contribute to show planning, safety, and client relations while tailoring hours to both Massey Theatre Society and applicants.

The roles include a weekly hourly commitment with opportunities for ongoing collaboration, a permanent FT position and an 8-month contract, with competitive pay and benefits. Wages are $31/hr.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a theatrical technician in a live performance or venue setting.
• Skilled with Yamaha digital audio consoles, ETC lighting consoles, and Dante audio networking.
• Proficient in rigging, stagecraft, and general AV equipment operation and troubleshooting.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with performers, staff, and clients.
• Detail-oriented, with solid technical problem-solving abilities under time pressure.
• Able to multitask and prioritize effectively during live events and tight production schedules.

Responsibilities

• Act as a representative for the Massey Theatre Society on all technical calls they are assigned in either lighting, audio or stage work.
• Meet with clients and other staff members when assigned.
• Ensure that external clientele needs are met in a safe and timely manner.
• Act as point of contact for client on show calls as assigned.
• Act as First Aid Attendant on calls. (Basic First Aid)
• Supervise Auxiliary crew and ensure that their tasks are being completed in a safe and timely manner.
• Add input to complications as they arise.
• Ensure that staff breaks are given in a timely manner.
• Complete show reports at the end of the workday.
• Open and close the building when necessary.
• Ensure that venue is restored to its house state at the end of calls and significant alterations.
• Supervise seating and / or room conversions.
• Aid and supervise in the maintenance cycle for the theatres and auxiliary spaces (Audio, Lighting, and Stage).
• Working show and maintenance calls as assigned by the Technical Directors.
• Contribute to general overall organization and general upkeep of all spaces.
• Participate in and contribute to Technical Department meetings as requested.

Massey Theatre Society is a not-for-profit organization established in 1983 which operates a large arts facility housing the 1,260 seat Massey Theatre and called Eighth & Eight Creative Spaces) as well as operating the 360 seat Anvil Theatre. We offer an array of performances and community activities. Facilities also include a 69 seat black box, 150 seat concert space, dance, media and rehearsal studios, shops and galleries, concessions and catering. Our goals include to create sustainable access and inclusion for all, with additional supports available for BIPOC, LGBTQ2+ and other underserved or historically excluded.

The 90,000 square foot main facility is nearing completion of major renewal, renovation and specialization projects and will be advancing its mission to provide dynamic and diverse entertainment, performances and program expansion.

Job Description:

Two Resident Technicians are needed at this time. One will be a permanent Full Time position and the second will be an 8-month contract (November 2026 – June 30, 2027) with potential to become FT permanent. The contract position will involve a weekly hourly commitment.

These are staff positions that support performances, technical planning and equipment maintenance for internal and external activities. We are interested in hearing from applicants about their desired weekly hours and will consider various scenarios that work for both Massey Theatre Society and potential applicants.

Remuneration:

Compensation and Scheduling: Wages will be $31/hr. The permanent position will be provided with 3 weeks of vacation accrued annually and a comprehensive benefit package including a matching RRSP contribution. The contract position will receive payment of 12% in lieu of benefits and vacation.
