Job summary

Chief Matthews School in Old Massett, BC, invites applications for a Classroom Teacher- Primary. The role focuses on a student-centred approach, Haida language and culture integration, and collaboration with a team of teachers and support staff to support diverse learners.

The position is full-time, year-to-year, reporting to the Principal, with duties including implementing BC Curriculum, family communication, and monitoring student progress within a culturally respectful environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education and valid BC teaching certificate.
  • Experience with Haida culture and First Nations students is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain Level 1 First Aid certification if not already held.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver an engaging primary classroom program aligned to BC Curriculum.
  • Incorporate Read Well Literacy and JUMP Math into instruction.
  • Adapt lessons for diverse learner needs and Haida language integration.
  • Collaborate with support staff and administration to support IEP/SMART goals.
  • Communicate with parents through formal reports and meetings.
  • Maintain student records and attendance as required.

We balance high expectations academically through the BC Curriculum with our Traditional Haida teachings. Our school is a K/4 to Grade 6 in Old Massett and we serve both Old Massett and neighbouring Massett communities.


As a strong group of approximately 30 staff members consisting of teachers, Education Assistants, Administration, and other support staff, we collaborate to create a thriving school community and ensure our students' success.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This position reports to the Principal and takes a student-first approach to promote a learning environment that supports our students' sense of well-being. Adopting a team approach to work in collaboration with the school community, the Teacher creates a thriving classroom environment for their students with varying needs and abilities to succeed academically, socially and emotionally while incorporating the Haida language and principles.


SELECT DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Works with the individual needs and abilities of the students within the classroom to create and facilitate an engaging and productive curriculum that adheres to the provincial and school standards established for the assigned learners

  • Incorporates the Read Well Literacy and JUMP Math programs into the curriculum offered to students

  • Develops, monitors, modifies, and tracks progress and goals of students' learning outcomes ensuring the integration of Haida culture and language

  • Acts as the point-person for the support staff in the classroom for class-related duties

  • Collaborates with support staff and with other teachers and professionals who work with students to ensure they are achieving their IEP/behaviour plan/SMART goals

  • Supports the adaptation of general lessons and plans activities to meet differing abilities using engaging activities to teach skills (example: drawing and theatre drama)

  • Reports to parents and guardians throughout the year and raises learning challenges, provides homework support, and identifies other educational issues. This includes three formal reports (report cards) and several informal reports (parent teacher conferences, student-led meetings, and ad hoc meetings to support various matters)

  • Maintains strict confidentiality and security of our students' information and records

  • Supervises, coaches and mentors other professionals who work with students requiring extra


support



  • Monitors students' behavioral patterns and arranges appropriate interventions if needed

  • Collaborates with teachers, support staff (example: classroom assistants, one-one workers, etc.) and Administration to address classroom challenges, supports conflict resolution and, where needed, partners with other professionals (example: counsellors and speech therapists) to create holistic intervention plans

  • Exercises judgment in modifying student behaviour by re-directing, and providing positive reinforcement within pre-established guidelines

  • Provides supervision of students during required school hours

  • Ensures regular student attendance and utilizes DRUMS to track attendance and demographic information, notifying school administration of a student absence immediately

  • Notifies school administration of personal absence or a leave immediately to ensure suitable

  • Facilitates student safety and acts as first point of contact for emergencies including reporting illness or injury to parents/guardians, and acting where needed for the safety of students

  • Participates in extra curricular and community functions, ongoing professional growth and learning

  • Other duties as required to help support our vision, fulfill our mission and abide by our values


YOU WILL BRING


  • Bachelor's degree in education

  • Current BC Teaching certificate

  • Training and experience in primary and/or intermediate instruction

  • Experience in teaching First Nations students at the primary level, particularly Haida culture, an asset

  • Training in Level 1 First Aid or better, or the willingness to obtain certification

  • Ability to work independently and in a remote educational environment

  • Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behaviour and confidentiality when dealing with students, peers and community

  • Must successfully pass a criminal record check
