Job summary

Bird Construction in Sudbury, Ontario is seeking a Superintendent to lead daily field operations on a marquee civil project. You will manage subcontractors and craft workers, enforce Bird Safety Program, and ensure work is performed safely, on schedule and to quality standards.

The role requires strong leadership, scheduling, and problem-solving skills, with experience in heavy civil contracting, ability to read drawings, and coordination across site teams.

Qualifications

  • Progressive experience in Heavy Civil Contracting as a Superintendent.
  • Experience supervising large civil projects on-site.
  • Ability to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications.
  • Strong safety leadership and field management.
  • Excellent scheduling, coordination and people leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safety leadership through Bird Safety Program and safety performance monitoring.
  • Lead site team relationships to promote morale.
  • Supervise and develop site team with regular feedback and coaching.
  • Contribute to development and refinement of project schedule.
  • Administer contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, site instructions and change notices.
  • Identify and resolve design deficiencies, schedule interruptions, and project issues.
  • Monitor subcontractor safety performance and quality of workmanship.
  • Maintain daily paperwork: field reports, safety inspections, schedule updates.
  • Ensure adequate manpower to meet safety, schedule and quality goals.

Job description

The Superintendent leads, directs and coordinates the work of subcontractors and the craft workforce. This leadership position is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the construction site on an assigned project, executing field operations safely and in a manner consistent with Company objectives. This role is based out of Sudbury, Ontario and does offer a fly in fly out option for any candidates who are eligible.

What You Will Be Working On
  • Provide safety leadership through implementation of Bird Safety Program and monitoring of safety performance of craft workforce, field staff and subcontractors.
  • Provide people leadership through establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the entire site team in order to promote positive morale.
  • Supervision and development of site team members through regular feedback, training and coaching; timely completion of performance evaluations.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of the project schedule.
  • Administer contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, site instructions and change notices to ensure scopes, terms and conditions are properly executed.
  • Identify and advise of design deficiencies, schedule interruptions or difficulties, and other project issues; works collaboratively with project team to resolve issues.
  • Monitor and evaluate subcontractor performance with regards to safety and scope of work.
  • Ensure quality of project team workmanship and building material.
  • Ensure sufficient manpower is provided to achieve safety, schedule and quality objectives.
  • Maintain daily paperwork including field reports, safety inspections, schedule updates, etc.
What We Are Looking For
  • Demonstrated, progressive experience in Heavy Civil Contracting as a Superintendent in Civil construction; direct field supervision of large civil projects.
  • Effective supervision, coordination and scheduling of construction activities to ensure consistent completion of projects on‑time, on budget and to the clients’ satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated leadership, field management and problem‑solving skills support your collaborative approach to delivering results and developing team members.
  • Service and results‑oriented, you are able to build and steward trust with a broad network of professional colleagues, subcontractors and team members to effect competitive excellence, pride in teamwork and outstanding project delivery.
  • You have demonstrated competence in the areas of safety, workforce management, project execution, cost control, quality and administration.
  • Proactive problem‑solver that can manage difficult situations with positive results.
  • Sound knowledge of construction and building techniques and ability to read and interpret contract drawings and specifications.
  • Good computer skills and proficiency with MS Office including MS Project.
  • Willingness to work across both city‑based and rotational project assignments, as required.
  • An equipment background is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with concrete and related scopes is considered an asset.
