Job description

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking a Civil/Structural Project Engineer to work on a 1‑year contract, with potential for renewal, for one of British Columbia’s most well‑known utility, energy, and natural gas companies.

The Civil Structural Project Engineer will support the Gas Engineering team by providing design and field engineering services for station projects and operational support activities. Responsibilities include conducting civil and structural assessments, feasibility studies, detailed designs, and engineering work for capital sustainment initiatives. The role involves developing and maintaining design standards, contributing to FEED studies, and preparing project estimates and scopes. The engineer will collaborate with internal teams and external consultants on projects related to natural gas transmission, distribution, CNG, and RNG stations, applying strong problem‑solving skills in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment. This role is based 5 days/week out of our clients Surrey, BC office. Remote candidates will not be considered.

Responsibilities
  • Complete design activities for new stations and related natural gas infrastructure.
  • Support projects from concept to detailed design, including reviews, IFC documentation, field support, and closeout.
  • Prepare engineering assessments and FEED studies, including economic, feasibility, and risk evaluations.
  • Develop and review mechanical construction drawings, material take‑offs, and specifications.
  • Collaborate with project teams to analyze costs, schedules, and resources to recommend optimal solutions.
  • Oversee and support the work of technologists, designers, drafters, and consultants.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and validate designs with engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support to operations and project management teams on civil engineering matters.
  • Deliver structural design and welding support for component fabrication.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 4–7 years of Civil or Structural Engineering experience in a related industry.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC or immediate eligibility.
  • Qualified as a Welding Engineer under CSA Standards W47.1 and W59 or familiarity with these standards.
  • Valid BC driver’s license (or ability to obtain one).
  • Ability to work as part of a large, multi‑disciplined team.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, set priorities and balance short and long‑term strategies to organize multiple projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and structural design software.
  • Knowledge of structural welding, concrete support structures and small structure design.
  • Understanding of engineering design techniques, tools and principles with emphasis on concrete and structural design.
  • Ability to consider constructability and cost effectiveness in design.
