About the Role

Providing civil, structural, and utility engineering services, the Civil Structural Engineer will be responsible for completing civil, structural and utility design on some of our most important projects to our clients in the gas utility industry. You will be responsible for communication with the EMB teams, our clients, sub-consultants, and external stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of our projects.

These responsibilities will include:

  • Provide engineering services for various aspects of design, including creation of engineering drawings, assessing existing structures, and scope writing for additional engineering services
  • Work with the Project Team and external stakeholders to provide engineered scopes, estimates and construction packages
  • Participate in engineering investigations to troubleshoot, evaluate, and provide recommendations on operational issues
  • Maintain current detailed knowledge of design criteria, material and processes through suppliers, literature, and industry organizations and conferences
  • Provide input to project controls including budgeting, scheduling, forecasting and risk analysis
  • Provide operational support as required
  • Authenticate engineering drawings and support the application of non-standard designs
  • Review and authenticate the work of others as needed
  • Ensure the quality of deliverables meets the expectations of EMB and our clients
  • Take professional responsibility for key project deliverables (drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, etc.)
Main Duties
  • Confer with clients and other members of the engineering team and conduct research to determine project requirements
  • Plan and design major civil projects such as buildings, roads, bridges, dams, water and waste management systems and structural steel fabrications
  • Develop construction specifications and procedures
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate building and construction materials
  • Interpret, review and approve survey and civil design work
  • Conduct field services for civil works
  • Ensure construction plans meet guidelines and specifications of building codes and other regulations
  • Establish and monitor construction work schedules
  • Conduct feasibility studies, economic analyses, municipal and regional traffic studies, environmental impact studies or other investigations
  • Prepare contract documents and review and evaluate tenders for construction projects
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia, or eligible for registration following completion of required supervised experience and professional practice examination
  • 2–10 years of engineering experience in utilities, pipeline, piping, and facilities projects, or in a project engineering role
  • Demonstrated ability to take professional responsibility for engineering documents and deliverables
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
  • Strong technical background with experience in civil, structural, and utility design
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams and with external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with budgeting, scheduling, risk analysis, and proposal writing
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills
