Job summary

Urban Systems is seeking a Project Engineer in Calgary to lead land development projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and drive practical civil solutions for local communities.

You will work on planning, design, and construction activities, coordinate with contractors and clients, and mentor junior staff while advancing your career within a respected Canadian firm.

Qualifications

  • Civil or Environmental Engineering graduate with 5+ years of land development experience.
  • Registered as P.Eng or eligible for registration with APEGA.
  • Strong communication and team collaboration skills.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or Civil 3D.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites in Southern Alberta.

Responsibilities

  • Lead land development projects and communicate with contractors, co-workers, clients and other consultants.
  • Develop project scopes, consultant fees, and project delivery plans.
  • Apply civil engineering and construction principles to earthworks, roads, water, sanitary, and drainage infrastructure.
  • Prepare and certify technical reports, plans, studies, proposals, drawings, details, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents.
  • Facilitate and manage land development approval processes in the Calgary area.
  • Coach engineers-in-training and junior civil technologists with cost estimating, contract preparation, and administration.
  • Explore creative and sustainable solutions with clients to build vibrant communities.

About the Opportunity

Our established Calgary office is looking to add a hardworking and motivated Project Engineer to our team of experts who provide quality service to our clients. We are looking for someone who shares our core values, has a passion for problem solving, and has a spark for consulting.

Civil engineering in land development is an integral part of our practice at Urban Systems. In this role, you will benefit from the support of industry professionals while working on a diverse range of exciting projects that make a tangible difference in many local communities. You will work collaboratively in teams on planning, designing, and implementing several projects with land development clients.

This role is a mix of project management, technical design, approvals coordination, and construction management, with a focus on practical civil engineering solutions to support land development clients. Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Being registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Licensee, or eligible for registration, with APEGA, or an equivalent provincial or territorial association.
  • Leading land development projects while proactively and professionally communicating with contractors, co-workers, clients, other consultants, and the public.
  • Working with clients to develop project scopes, consultant fees, and project delivery plans.
  • Applying civil engineering and construction principles to provide workable solutions for earthworks, roads, water, sanitary, and drainage infrastructure projects.
  • Developing technical engineering skills and understanding local and federal regulatory requirements related to land development planning, design, and construction within and surrounding Calgary, Alberta.
  • Preparing and certifying technical reports, plans, studies, proposals, presentations, construction drawings, details, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents;
  • Facilitate and manage land development approval processes in the Calgary area, including planning level support, servicing studies, construction drawings, grading and servicing plans, stormwater management strategies, and construction close out documentation.
  • Coaching and mentoring engineers-in-training and junior civil engineering technologists with cost estimating, contract preparation and administration, project coordination, construction management, and report preparation for civil infrastructure related to community development.
  • Exploring creative and sustainable solutions together with our clients to build vibrant communities.
About You

Our ideal candidate will be a Civil or Environmental Engineering graduate with 5+ years of experience, with a focus on land development. The successful candidate will be registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) or Professional Licensee (P.L. Eng), or eligible for registration, with APEGA, or an equivalent provincial or territorial association.

  • You have an understanding of GIS and asset management principles and applications.

  • You possess a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and are willing and able to travel to project sites throughout Southern Alberta.
