Job summary

Dawson Civil in Kamloops, BC seeks a Junior Estimator to prepare comprehensive cost estimates for projects, review tender drawings, and visit sites to gather essential data for accurate bids.

The role reports to the Manager Operations and requires 1–3 years in construction, with a diploma or engineering degree preferred. Travel across the province is involved.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree or civil engineering technical diploma, or equivalent combination of education and training.
• 1–3 years of construction industry experience.
• Experience in estimating, project coordination, or field work.
• Familiarity with estimating software, preferably HCSS.

Responsibilities

• Prepare a comprehensive project cost estimate including labour, equipment, materials, safety, subcontractors, overhead, taxes, insurance and markup.
• Review drawings and contract documents for each tender.
• Site visits to collect information on access, topography, drainage, power, material sources, haul times, and site conditions.
• Perform quantity takeoffs and estimate costs for materials, labour, equipment and subcontractor work.
• Analyze subcontractor quotes for completeness, competitiveness, capability, and scheduling constraints.
• Assess equipment needs, work sequences, crew size, and site constraints.
• Assist in cost management, negotiation and settlements of change orders in conjunction with the lead Project Manager.

Job description

Dawson Civil is looking for a motivated Junior Estimator who will skillfully assess costs, collaborate with stakeholders and partners, and apply their industry knowledge to deliver precise and competitive estimates.

In this role you will be a valued member of Dawson Civil, working in a permanent, full-time position of Junior Estimator, reporting to the Manager Operations. To be considered for this role, you should have effective interpersonal skills, a collaborative attitude and a solid understanding of estimating methods and techniques. Your base location will be Kamloops, BC and will require travel throughout our great province.

What Success Looks Like

• Prepare a comprehensive project cost estimate including; labour, equipment, materials, safety, subcontractors, overhead, taxes, insurance, and mark‑up.
• Review drawings and understand the contract documents of each tender.
• Visit the jobsite to gather information on access, topography, drainage, power supply, material sources, haul times, existing conditions or services, water source and other specifics as required.
• Perform accurate quantity takeoffs and estimate the cost of materials, labour, equipment, and subcontractor's work, ascertaining that all areas have been accounted for prior to submitting tenders.
• Analyze quotes made by subcontractors for completeness, competitive pricing, ability to perform, and scheduling restraints.
• Assess equipment needs, operations sequence, crew size, and site constraints.
• Manage the cost, negotiation and settlement of change orders and mitigate potential claims during construction in conjunction with the lead Project Manager.

What You Bring

• Engineering Degree or Civil Engineering Technical diploma; or
• An equivalent combination of education, technical training and/or related industry experience
• One (1) to three (3) years of experience in the construction industry;
• Previous estimating, project coordination, or field experience
• Familiarity with estimating software, preferably HCSS
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
