Job summary

TC Energy seeks an experienced Civil/Structural Engineer for CGL Phase 2. You will design and oversee civil/structural aspects for compressor stations along the pipeline in BC and AB, coordinating with LNG Canada and contractors.

You will lead technical queries, review deliverables, and support procurement and change management while mentoring junior engineers in a dynamic North American energy project.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degree in Civil Engineering with Structural specialization.
  • 8+ years of industry experience in engineering design for natural gas pipeline compression projects.
  • Commitment to safety in design, construction and operations.
  • Ability to work independently with creativity and sound engineering judgement.
  • Knowledge of CSA and natural gas industry codes and regulations in Canada.
  • Knowledge of Canadian construction practices in natural gas.
  • Strong organizational skills; manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to travel within North America as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead resolution of technical queries during detailed engineering, construction and commissioning.
  • Review 3rd party deliverables to ensure conformance with project standards.
  • Assess variance requests from project org or LNG Canada.
  • Plan and coordinate engagement of internal stakeholders to review deliverables.
  • Collaborate with Project Stakeholders (Management, Environment, Operations).
  • Contribute to design reviews during FEED and detailed engineering.
  • Provide procurement support: plan, review packages, bid evaluation, supplier qualification.
  • Track key deliverables and adjust plans to meet customer needs.
  • Support change management to maintain design integrity.
  • Mentor EITs and junior engineers.

The Opportunity

The CGL Phase 2 Integrated Delivery Team is working with LNG Canada to progress the design of the expansion scope for the Coastal Gaslink pipeline system. The CGL Phase 2 Engineering team are seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to support the design of the five compressor station sites along the pipeline route in British Columbia, as well as modifications to the existing brownfield facilities near Dawson Creek, BC and Kitimat, BC. This position will provide Civil/Structural design oversight for the natural gas compressor station locations, working in concert with LNG Canada and Engineering contractors involved in the project design and construction planning.

What you’ll do
  • Lead the resolution and response to technical queries issued during detailed engineering, construction and commissioning for the CGL Phase 2 project;
  • Review 3rd party engineering deliverables (drawings, calculations, project specific specifications, etc.) to ensure work is executed and managed in accordance with defined Project Standards;
  • Assess and resolve variance requests originating from CGL project organization or project partners (LNG Canada)
  • Plan and coordinate engagement of internal stakeholders including operations, to provide input to and review of engineering deliverables;
  • Collaborate and provide engineering support to Project Stakeholders (Project Management, Environment, Operations, etc.);
  • Contribute to project design reviews with Project Stakeholders during FEED and detailed engineering;
  • Provide procurement support to include:
    • Engineering & Material Procurement Plan
    • Material Requisition package review and approval
    • Technical and Commercial bid review and approval
    • Qualification of suppliers
  • Track key engineering deliverables and adjust engineering plans and/or resources to meet the needs of customers; responsible for reporting status to project management and making corrective actions as needed;
  • Identify changes and support management of change process to ensure integrity is maintained throughout the design development process;
  • Transfers knowledge through setting an example and coaching EITs and junior engineers
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degree in Civil Engineering, with Structural Engineering specialization

  • 8+ years industry experience with focus on Engineering design for natural gas pipeline compression projects or similar scale facilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety in design, construction and operations phases

  • Ability and initiative to work independently, display creativity, and exercise sound engineering judgement

  • Knowledge of engineering design standards and applicable natural gas industry codes and regulations (CSA, etc.)

  • Knowledge of applicable natural gas industry construction practices in Canada

  • Demonstrated superior organizational skills and proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a major project environment

  • Ability to read and understand technical documents including information on new management concepts and new technology

  • Understands concepts of asset lifecycle management, system reliability and gas transmission operations

  • Ability to recognize and evaluate risks, hazards, losses and prevent conflicts between activities

  • Analytical, communication, facilitation and negotiation skills are needed

  • Ability to travel within North America as needed to support job function

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven experience with TC Energy project development, and the implementation of company specifications and design standards in major projects
  • Proven experience with natural gas pipeline projects in British Columbia
  • Registered with EGBC in province of British Columbia & APEGA in Alberta
  • Ability to operate within a complex organizational structure involving external counterparties
  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of project execution risk assignment between counterparties
  • Understands and expresses complex and sensitive concepts clearly, correctly and in a well-organized form
  • Skilled in the areas of team facilitation, collaboration, negotiation and influencing, process mapping, problem solving and creative solutions
  • Ability to recognize strategic implications of problems and issues

This position requires candidates to

  • Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Travel to project site locations on an intermittent basis (<10% of the time)
