Job description

The Civil Design Technician will work in a multi-disciplinary branch providing integrated project management, engineering, design and construction services for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities at the Whiteshell (WL) site. Under general direction from the Branch Manager, the employee will contribute to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs of civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural and HVAC systems.

Responsibilities
  • Lead design initiatives by managing assigned projects and overseeing all aspects of job execution.
  • Provide assistance in resolving identified issues to prevent or mitigate loss of schedule and budget.
  • Provide job updates and status reports to management.
  • Guide the work of several technologists, coordinating schedules and assigning tasks to reach an overall objective within cost, quality and time requirements.
  • Provide mentorship and technical oversight to junior technologists.
  • Check the work of junior staff and provide guidance.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and related documents for civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural and HVAC design.
  • Prepare and revise CADD drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, Civil3D, and hand drawings.
  • Conduct walk‑downs to support, troubleshoot, and make revisions to civil, building services, outdoor services, architectural, structural, and HVAC systems.
  • Update the Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS) or the Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS) documentation for equipment on Instrument, Valve or Equipment lists.
  • Identify and request additional resources required to complete assigned work on schedule.
  • Provide support in the preparation of as‑built drawings with a personal commitment to safety and a questioning attitude.
  • Show attention to detail and accuracy, along with being a self‑motivated individual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your manager.
Qualifications
  • Education
    • Graduate from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education and have more than six (6) years of relevant technological experience.
    • Secondary School graduation diploma or equivalent and have more than 10 years of relevant experience, or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
    • Experience and knowledge of design drafting techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Produce neat, legible, and accurate drawings in a reasonable time.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in both written and oral communication.
    • Follow and implement complex procedures.
    • Demonstrate initiative, motivation, and people skills enabling work with peers, internal and external customers in a team environment.
    • Work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
    • Interpret marked‑up drawings.
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
    • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3–5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions
  • Working schedule: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • This position is part of the Whiteshell Technical Employees Group and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the WTEG Collective Agreement.
