Job description

Employment Status: Temporary part-time to December 13, 2026 (CUPE 5348)
Location: System wide. Must travel between different locations throughout Oakville.
Hours: 18 hours per week with ability to work all shifts (days, evenings, and weekends)

Do you have a passion for working with children and delivering quality children’s programming? Oakville Public Library has seven library branches that are dedicated to serving the diverse community of Oakville. The Children’s Programmer supports Oakville Public Library’s mission to bring together people, information, and ideas to build healthy communities. In this role, you’ll plan and implement creative in‑person and virtual children’s programs and provide services that will connect children and their families with resources, ideas, and experiences that will inform and inspire.

What you’ll do
  • Conduct children and youth programs at library branches, off‑site, and in virtual spaces. Virtual programming may include prerecorded or live videos for social media and virtual meeting spaces as required.
  • Plan, develop and implement programs for children that promote early literacy skills and educate caregivers on early literacy practices, STEAM concepts, physical or other literacies.
  • Create an inclusive and welcoming environment for children and caregivers.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, leadership, and external partners via email, phone, virtual meeting rooms, and in‑person.
  • Apply knowledge of early childhood development to deliver and assist with the development of preschool library programs.
  • Select and promote appropriate library materials and resources to program participants.
  • Deliver excellent service to customers of all ages by adhering to OPL’s Customer Experience Values and being in compliance with AODA’s Customer Service Standard.
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, other relevant health and safety legislation, and the OPL’s Health & Safety Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your experience and educational background
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma or equivalent education/experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and implementing creative children and youth programs.
