Job Overview

The Child and Youth Counsellor (CYC) plays a vital role in supporting children and youth with complex mental health needs and their families in Norman Wells. As a key member of the community counselling team within the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA), the CYC delivers specialized therapeutic and behavioural support services, primarily in school settings. The position involves direct client care, collaborative service planning, mental health education, and coordination with local agencies to ensure integrated, culturally safe, and trauma-informed care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct assessments and deliver evidence-based therapy to children and youth with emotional, behavioural, and mental health challenges, including individual, family, and group counselling.
  • Collaborate with families and community partners to create integrated, person- and family-centered care plans, and monitor their implementation and outcomes.
  • Offer mental health consultation, training and crisis intervention support to school staff, community service providers and other professionals.
  • Foster collaboration among health, education, justice and local organizations to deliver wraparound supports for children, youth and families.
  • Support trauma-informed and culturally relevant practices, advocate for client needs across agencies and promote wellness through community events and partnerships.
Key Qualifications
  • A Masters degree in Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or Counselling (Not Human Ecology, Public Health, Therapeutic Recreation, Child and Youth Care) AND two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or Counselling (Not Human Ecology, Public Health, Therapeutic Recreation, Child and Youth Care) and five (5) years of direct counselling experience.
