Overview

The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation (MSIFN) is looking for an experienced Child and Youth Worker to join our community on a full-time basis in Scugog, ON. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The Child and Youth Worker is required to be onsite Monday to Friday. The role reports to the Health and Social Services Manager and focuses on providing holistic health programs and services with an emphasis on addictions and mental health care and services to members.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement programming and activities focusing on healthy living, life skills and autonomy, personal confidence, self-esteem, and enhancement of cultural identity, including prevention of drug use and alcohol abuse.
  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities that embody self-responsibility, community building, and positive life choices.
  • Plan, carry out, and assess developmentally appropriate activities that promote the well-being of each child and reflect the needs of children, youth, and families.
  • Ensure recreational, prevention, and social programs reflect MSIFN’s culture and traditions.
  • Assist children and youth in expressing themselves by listening and responding with questions or comments that extend conversations and provide support.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment for all children and youth.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/legal guardians.
  • Build strong interpersonal relationships with children and youth both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Engage with youth in creating an MSIFN Youth Council and provide ongoing support and reporting on progress.
  • Fulfill the Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program by supporting parents/caregivers from prenatal period to the child’s sixth birthday.
  • Maintain program statistics for evaluation, research, and reporting; prepare annual financial budget and work plan; monitor budget expenses to ensure programs operate within approved budgets and complete internal financial reporting; identify and submit funding proposals as directed.
  • Complete financial reporting specific to program funding sources.
Qualifications
  • College Diploma in a related social services program (Early Childhood Education and/or Child and Youth Care Worker) required.
  • 1 year of work-related experience; 3 years total experience or equivalent training and experience as determined by the hiring committee.
Specialization Required
  • Valid driver’s license and $1M liability insurance.
  • CPIC acceptable to position upon conditional offer.
  • Knowledge of child and youth development and trauma-informed, culturally safe practices.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with children, families, Elders, schools, and community partners.
  • Planning and delivering programs that promote healthy development and reflect community values.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills and other skills that engage families and children/youth to seek services and participate in program activities.
  • Capacity to manage crises effectively, using prevention and de-escalation strategies.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, including accurate reporting and program evaluation.
  • Knowledge of MSIFN programs and services.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
Desirable/Assets
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution training (preferred).
  • Cultural Sensitivity Training (preferred).
  • Work experience with a First Nation or Indigenous Organization (preferred).
Compensation and Benefits

Pay rate: $35.48 – G1. Minimum qualifications include the above; compensation details below are provided for reference.
