Job summary

Closer to Home Community Services in Calgary/Airdrie seeks a permanent full-time Child & Youth Counselor to support children in a community group home. Using the Teaching Family Model, you will assist with daily routines, supervision, skill development and crisis management.

Applicants should have a diploma or degree in a related field; experience with vulnerable children is preferred. The role requires a valid Alberta driver's license, reliable vehicle, and the ability to work evenings,

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in a related field preferred; experience with vulnerable children is an asset.
  • Experience in Community Group Care or other in-care programs is preferred.
  • Willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Requires a personal vehicle with Class 5 Alberta license, clean 3-year drivers abstract, and maintained liability insurance.

  • Assisting with day-to-day activities and routines, visits and appointments.
  • Implementing skill development strategies, managing crises and assisting with school difficulties.
  • Focusing on interconnectedness, including family, academics, recreation and community inclusion.
  • Supporting children and youth with strategies to enhance wellbeing and belonging.
  • Completing day-to-day household tasks such as cooking and cleaning.
  • Transporting youth to school, appointments or visits.
  • Documenting critical incident reports and attending regular meetings.
  • This role may involve travel across Calgary and Airdrie.
  • Adhere to workplace protocols regarding animals in group homes.

About the Position: This permanent full-time position works with a team of professionals to support children and youth in a community group home in Calgary/Airdrie. Utilizing the Teaching Family Model as a holistic approach, you will facilitate success for children and youth by assisting with day to day activities and routines, maintaining a structured setting, fostering skill development, managing crisis, ensuring high levels of supervision to promote safety, and assisting with schoolwork household duties. Please note that the Intervention Record Check (IRC) from Children and Family Services and Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (PIC) are one of the non-negotiable compliance requirements for all Closer to Home employees before an offer letter can be issued. We highly encourage all applicants to apply for the IRC and PIC before the interview as it can take up to 6 weeks to process.   • This position may involve travel to various locations across Calgary and Airdrie, as assigned
  • Adhere to workplace protocols regarding animals in group homes, including reporting any allergy risks or concerns.
Qualifications
  • A diploma or degree in a related field is preferred and previous experience working with vulnerable children and families is an asset; a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience working in Community Group Care or other “in-care” programs (preferred)
  • Experience providing trauma-informed, family-sensitive and culturally responsive care
  • Willing to work an unstructured work week, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for work-related purposes. Candidates must show proof of a class 5 Alberta driver's license, a personal vehicle, and a clean 3-year drivers abstract. Candidates must also agree to maintain $2 million liability insurance on their personal vehicle, and consent to the possibility of an annual driver's abstract review to meet our insurance provider’s requirements. Mileage will be reimbursed in alignment with the CRA guidelines and CTH policy.
  • A Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and an Intervention Record Check must be completed prior to commencement.
  • Ability to manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with and relate to people of all ages
  • Detail oriented and organized, able to manage multiple priorities at the same time
  • Eager to learn and carry out the principles and philosophy of Closer to Home and the Teaching Family Model
