Job summary

MERIEUX NUTRISCIENCES in Burnaby, BC seeks a Chemistry Laboratory Technician on a fixed-term contract. The role covers wet/instrument chemistry, sample preparation and maintenance, reporting to the supervisor.

You will follow QA processes and safety policies while maintaining equipment and logbooks. The ideal candidate has a chemistry-related diploma and is capable of routine analyses, sample prep, and glassware handling in a busy lab environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Prepare media, chemicals and reagents.
  • Prepare, homogenize, weigh and extract samples.
  • Perform routine analyses (moisture, ash, pH, sensory).
  • Collect, wash and dry glassware; return to storage.
  • Ensure the department is stocked with supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the laboratory and surrounding areas.
  • Assist maintenance and janitorial with cleaning duties as requested.
  • Update logbooks and maintenance records; know the LIMS.
  • Support quality and continuous improvement; document non-conformances.
  • Adhere to safety policies and perform related duties.

YOUR DAY TO DAY LIFE

We are looking for a Chemistry Laboratory Technician - Fixed Term Contract in #106- 8255 North Fraser Way, Burnaby, BC V3N OB9 CAN. Your mission will be to:

Purpose (Objective): The incumbent is responsible for providing basic assistance to the wet chemistry, instrumental chemistry, sample preparation and maintenance operations of the laboratory. This position reports directly to the supervisor of the department in which they are working.

  • Prepare media, chemicals and reagents.
  • Prepare, homogenize, weigh and perform simple extraction of samples
  • Provide routine sample analysis such as moisture, ash, pH, sensory, etc.
  • Collect, wash and dry glassware and other containers used throughout the laboratory and return to the designated locations in the laboratory. Conduct a residue test on glassware as needed.
  • Ensure the department is stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the laboratory and surrounding areas.
  • Assist the maintenance and janitorial personnel with other cleaning requirements as requested.
  • Update logbooks and maintenance records as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities.
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes. Perform necessary tasks related to quality control parameters for the function being performed.
  • This position has the responsibility and authority to identify departures from the quality system or test procedures and document such observations in accordance with the prescribed non-conforming system and notifies the supervisor.
  • Adhere to all safety policies.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

YOUR PROFILE

Knowledge:

Profile:

  • A diploma in chemistry, microbiology or food science is preferred but previous experience is accepted.

Required skills:

  • This position requires the ability to follow specific instructions.
  • A general understanding of the needs of the laboratory is required to avoid delays in sample testing or inaccurate results.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required to interact with peers and management.

Work Environment:

  • The incumbent works in the laboratory with proper lighting and temperature control.
  • Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials will occur when in the laboratory.
  • The incumbent works in the laboratory with increased temperatures near the autoclave and washer.
  • The incumbent is required to wear masks, laboratory coat and insulated gloves when working with the media.
  • Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds is necessary when loading and preparing samples for autoclaving.
  • The incumbent can expect extended time spent in a standing position.

Compensation Overview: Compensation Range $21.48 - $22.61 hourly CAD. The information above provides a general overview and may vary based on specific job responsibilities, location, or other factors. Details will be clarified during the hiring process.
