Job description

Job Description

Overview

AtkinsRéalis is currently seeking a Chemist Engineer to join our Materials, Welding, and Chemistry – Engineering Excellence team. This position is for a senior-level engineer who demonstrates strong technical capability and growing leadership in materials, metallurgical, and welding engineering, with a particular emphasis on manufacturing and fabrication support in nuclear and other regulated environments.

Your role

Perform and lead chemistry and corrosion related engineering work in support of nuclear power plant projects and prepare technical documentation in accordance with AtkinsRéalis/Candu Energy QA programs, applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements:

  • Lead or support improvements to materials and manufacturing processes through chemistry and corrosion considerations.

  • Establish and develop chemistry specifications, operating limits, and monitoring strategies for nuclear power plant systems to prevent component degradation and support safe plant operation.

  • Independently assess chemistry impacts on materials, manufacturing processes, plant systems, and component performance.

  • Conduct and support corrosion assessments for metallic and non-metallic materials used in nuclear systems, structures, components, and tooling.

  • Evaluate degradation mechanisms including general corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, galvanic corrosion, flow accelerated corrosion, and environmentally assisted cracking.

  • Support and lead selected failure investigations and root cause analyses related to chemistry and corrosion issues.

  • Lead or support material degradation, corrosion, and chemistry testing programs, including coordination with internal and external laboratories.

  • Analyze plant operating data, chemistry data, inspection results, and laboratory test data using statistical and engineering methods.

  • Support material selection and qualification activities for new builds, refurbishment projects, and operating stations.

  • Incorporate R&D results and products, in the areas of chemistry, corrosion, and material behaviours, into the CANDU systems and new reactor designs.

  • Provide technical support related to cleanliness, corrosion protection, preservation, handling, and inspection requirements during manufacturing of nuclear components (steam generators, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping).

  • Interface directly with clients, suppliers, fabricators, testing laboratories, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to execute engineering work and resolve technical issues.

  • Provide technical guidance and review work to support collaboration with laboratories, clients, and external organizations.

  • Review technical reports, calculations, and assessments prepared by junior staff for technical accuracy, quality, and completeness.

  • Support proposal preparation, technical presentations, and business development activities when required.

  • Perform complex assignments independently with minimal supervision and identify appropriate technical solutions to engineering challenges.

  • Expectation for completed work is for it to be generally accepted as technically accurate and in compliance with policies and procedures and is reviewed for soundness of judgement and feasibility.

About you

  • B. Sc., B. Sc. Eng. or Graduate degree related to chemistry or Engineering Chemist including courses and/or work experience in such applications.

  • Eligibility to be registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario is an asset.

  • 5-8 years of related work experience in chemistry, corrosion, materials engineering, or engineering consulting, preferably within nuclear power plant environments.

  • Experience working in laboratory and testing environments, including qualification programs and coordination with external laboratories.

  • Working knowledge of CANDU reactor systems, reactor materials, pressure boundary components, and balance-of-plant systems.

  • Working knowledge of CSA N285.6 and ASME Section II/III/V/IX codes and any other applicable standards or regulatory guides related to permanent plant components, pressure boundary equipment, and/or reactor systems is preferred.

  • Strong Knowledge of process chemistry of nuclear power plants, including primary and secondary water-borne systems, water treatment, radiolysis, and chemistry control programs.

  • Advanced knowledge of degradation mechanisms impacting metallic and non-metallic materials in nuclear power plant environments, including from the contribution of radiation.

  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistical methods, modeling tools, and engineering software applications.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and technical analysis software.

  • Must be able to apply technical principles in a logical and practical manner to resolve engineering issues or technical problems.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and coordinate technical activities across organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex technical problems and provide practical engineering solutions.

  • Self-initiative to perform research and gather information.
