The ACT Arts Centre (The ACT) is located in the community of Maple Ridge on the traditional and unceded territories of the Katzie First Nation and the Kwantlen First Nation, and is part of the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). Operated by the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Arts Council, the Centre is is the leading provider of engaging, vibrant and excellent Arts Learning Programs, Gallery Exhibitions and Performing Arts Presentations for the growing communities of the region. Opened in 2003, the 486-seat theatre, studio theatre and instruction studios are home to many cultural and community events, delivering an array of diverse arts and cultural programming and activities to over 70,000 patrons annually

Working within a team and reporting to the Arts Learning Programs Manager, the Ceramics Studio Technicians provide technical support for specialized processes and equipment in dynamic ACT Arts Centre Ceramics Studio, to ensure safe, smooth and efficient operations of the program and space for over 500 students and instructors annually.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:
•Ceramic Studio Maintenance: Keep equipment, tools, and supplies in good working order, ensuring cleanliness and safety standards are met. Ensure routine maintenance and studio cleaning guidelines, and policies
•Materials Management: Monitor inventory of glazes, tools, and kiln accessories and notify administration in a timely manner when supplies must be re-ordered. Enact a system for clay recycling and disposal.
•Kiln Operation: Load, unload, and maintain three kilns, ensuring proper firing procedures are followed and keeping kiln firing logs up to date.
•Glaze and Slip Preparation: Mix and maintain glazes, slips, and oxides, ensuring quality and consistency for participant use as scheduled.
•Studio Instruction and Support: Assist studio users, answer questions, and provide guidance on techniques and materials.
•Administrative Tasks: Must attend regular Ceramic Technician meetings and maintain ceramics studio work logs.
•Safety and Compliance: Ensure adherence to all WHMIS and SDS standards, including maintaining all maintenance and safety logs for the ceramic studio equipment. Participate in regular communication with Arts Learning Programs Manager and Facility Operations Manager about any problems and/or recommendations regarding equipment and facilities which may affect the safe operation of the ceramic studio. Documenting all accidents/incidents immediately and ensuring all reports are received by the Department within 24 hours.
•Studio Orientation and Training: Conduct orientations for new instructors, volunteers, and students as required.
•Collaboration and Communication: Work with colleagues, ceramics technicians, instructors, staff, and studio users to ensure a positive and productive environment.
•Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

•A college diploma or degree, or other recognized technical qualifications, specializing in ceramics, craft and design, or fine arts.
•1-2 years' experience in a ceramic studio and some experience as an assistant technician.
•Must have a strong working knowledge of glaze formulations, and how to adjust for accurate fired appearance, as well as specific gravity (SG), etc., so that glazes are always in top working condition.
•Have a strong working knowledge of basic kiln repair and maintenance: ability and knowledge to change elements, relays and thermocouples as needed or on a regular maintenance cycle is a plus.
•Excellent communication and customer service skills are required.
•Successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory and up-to-date criminal and vulnerable sector screening check as a condition of employment.
