Job description
Position Overview

Work at CBC / Radio‑Canada, a public broadcaster with a national reach, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians. The CBC News Summer Scholarship is a four‑month, in‑person program that provides hands‑on experience in multiplatform news environments. Scholars will be placed in CBC News’ national programming units in Toronto for the first two months, and in a regional CBC station for the second two months.

Eligibility
  • Graduating or final‑year post‑secondary students (college or university) who will graduate between fall 2025 and spring 2026 and who have finished all classes and assignments by May 4, 2026.
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada and able to work full‑time, in‑person during the scholarship.
  • Must possess a valid Canadian driver’s licence with a clean record acceptable to CBC/Radio‑Canada’s insurer.
  • Will be open to work at CBC after the scholarship ends, if an opportunity is available.

Work During the Scholarship
  • Pitching and chasing original story ideas.
  • Conducting research and interviews.
  • Gathering and editing audio and video.
  • Fact‑checking, writing and packaging stories and scripts.
  • Booking guests for live interviews.
  • Presenting material on‑air or online.
Potential Placements

May and June – National program or unit in Toronto. Possible units include Audio News, Newsgathering, Digital, Digital Radio, Social, Syndicated Audio, Investigative, News Network, The Current, Day 6, Front Burner, As It Happens, The National, About That.

July and August – Regional station. Possible locations: British Columbia (Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George or Prince Rupert), Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon or Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal or Quebec City, Fredericton or Saint John, Halifax, Charlottetown, St. John’s.

Compensation and Benefits

Full‑time positions with compensation of approximately $23 per hour. Scholars accrue five vacation days by the end of the placement. CBC covers work‑related travel costs; scholars are responsible for accommodation and living expenses.

Application Requirements

Submit a single PDF containing the following:

  • A one‑page cover letter explaining what you will bring to the program.
  • Resume, maximum two pages.
  • Three examples of your journalism work with links (one example must be timely and topical coverage). Provide one sentence explaining each submission.

Applicants must also provide the contact details of a recommender who can speak to their journalism skills and answer additional eligibility questions. Placement preferences may be indicated during the application form.

Application Process

Applicants may be required to complete skills and knowledge testing. Selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. Non‑selected candidates will not receive further notification.
