Job summary

St. Francis Xavier School is looking for a casual bus driver to operate the school bus safely, transporting students within Edmonton and occasionally beyond the area.

The driver must hold an Alberta Class 2 license with an S-Endorsement and air brakes certification, and comply with Alberta Traffic Laws and OHS regulations. Duties include starting shifts early mornings with on-call evening/out-of-town trips as needed.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.
• Knowledge of Edmonton area and traffic systems.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and legislation.
• Knowledge of highway and school bus regulation and related safety legislation.
• Valid Alberta Class 2 license with S-Endorsement and air brakes certification.
• Knowledge of Division and department policies and procedures.
• Basic computer skills (Word/Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Safe operation of Division vehicles in adherence to Alberta Traffic Laws and Division policies.
• Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to legislation and procedures.
• Pick-up and drop-off students according to the schedule.
• Take attendance on the school bus.
• Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers.
• Maintain order and discipline on the school bus.
• Report any issues to supervisor and maintain vehicle mileage records.
• Ensure the bus is stored safely when not in use.

Job description

St. Francis Xavier school is seeking a casual bus driver to join them. The Bus Driver is accountable to operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life. The job will routinely drive students to events within the City of Edmonton with some travel outside of the area. Upon completion of daily routines, the incumbent will assist with additional duties.

The incumbent must hold an Alberta Class 2 driver’s licence with an S-Endorsement and certification to operate vehicles with air brakes.

The work is strongly guided by the Alberta Traffic Laws. The work is also guided by Division standards, policies, procedures, protocols and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safe operation of Division vehicles in adherence to Alberta Traffic Laws and Division policies regarding operation of vehicles
• Operate the school bus in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
• Pick-up and drop-off students in accordance within a set schedule
• Take attendance on the school bus
• Ensure students are aware of rules and responsibilities as passengers
• Maintain order and discipline on the school bus
• Make note of any behavioural or disciplinary problems
• Ensure vehicle is maintained in a clean and road-worthy condition by performing daily cleaning, and routine maintenance checks
• Advise the principal of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
• Report any traffic tickets, accidents, defects or mechanical problems to supervisor and maintain records of vehicle mileage pertaining to regular maintenance schedules
• Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored
• Resolve problems due to late pick-ups or drop offs
• Perform other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge and Experience:

• High School Diploma
• Knowledge of Edmonton and area with a well-developed understanding of road and traffic systems
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and legislation
• Knowledge of highway and school bus regulation and related safety legislation
• Valid Alberta Class 2 driver’s license with an S-Endorsement and certification to operate vehicles with air brakes
• Knowledge of Division and department policies and procedures
• Working knowledge of Microsoft programs – Word, Outlook and the Internet
• General knowledge of the Division’s operations and the school’s programs is required

Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to provide a clean Driver’s Abstract upon hire and as requested
• Ability to schedule and plan priorities to meet deadlines and manage conflicting demands
• Good communication skills
• Fluency in the English language including both oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to exercise tact, courtesy and good judgment when dealing with teachers, students, co-workers and the general public

Availability

• Available during school hours 8:00AM to 3:00PM as needed
• Available as early as 6:00 AM
• Available for evening trips (can be up to 10:00 PM)
• Available for overnight out of town trips as needed
• Casual position - no guarantee of set hours and are on call
