The role requires an active Registered Practical Nurse with current CNO registration and immunization competencies. A vehicle and Ontario driver’s license are advantageous, with travel as needed.

Qualifications

We are searching for an experienced Casual Vaccinator at our Port Hope office at Lakelands Public Health.

Position Summary

Asa member of the Clinical Services Division the Immunization Nurse isaccountable to Clinical Services Management for the implementation of theassigned Requirements of the Infectious Diseases Program Standards of the Ontario Public HealthStandards (OPHS) 2018 and related protocols and guidelinesincluding but not limited to the: Immunization Management Protocol; Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocol; and Other duties as assigned by Health Protection Management. Areas of emphasis may include VaccinePreventable Diseases, immunization, and vaccine management. The Immunization Nurse is expected to workindependently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to apply, adapt, chooseand/or recommend changes to established methods, procedures or policies and/orto develop new procedures for approval to complete assigned work. TheImmunization Nurse will seek direction when solutions to problems are notapparent and/or are not within the intent of established practices includingscope of practice. As a member of the Clinical Services Division, the Immunization Nurse, under thedirection of the Director and Managers will provide immunizations at organizedhealth unit clinics and complete other vaccine and immunization relatedactivities in a variety of locations as assigned. An Immunization Nurse mayalso be required to accept direction from a VPD Nurse or Immunization Nurse whois coordinating a specific clinic. All Registered Nurses, including RegisteredPractical Nurses, employed by Lakelands Public Health (LPH) are required tomaintain competency in immunization and participate in clinics as required. AnImmunization Nurse is required to work with other Clinical Services Divisionteam members and with members of the public to ensure access to provinciallyfunded vaccines; promote immunization of individuals of all ages; provideimmunization, consultation, education, and health promotion. ImmunizationNurses will also contribute to data collection, clinic organization and clinicevaluation. Otherduties may include vaccine storage and handling activities and consultationwith Health Care Providers (HCP); vaccine refrigerator inspections; and theprovincial Panorama Immunization and Inventory System. The position involves travel and variationsof the working day.

Duties andResponsibilities will include:
Administrationand Human Resources
  • Maintainscurrent, accurate documentation in client files and program records asrequired
  • Producesprogram specific technical and administrative reports as required
  • Workswith management and team members to facilitate communication, work andknowledge sharing, and timely completion of tasks
  • Meetswith the management team and Clinical Services Division team as requiredfor communication, consultation, and reporting purposes
  • Worksin accordance with the National Standard of Canada for PsychologicalHealth and Safety in the Workplace. Consultswith the Chief Nursing Officer on matters related to professionalpractice.
Professional
  • Maintainsregistration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Maintainscurrent knowledge of and adheres to CNO guidelines and Standards ofPractice.
  • Maintainscompetency by attending appropriate continuing education workshops,conferences and seminars, through private study and/or participation innetworks as approved by Clinical Services Management, and in accordancewith Regulated Health Professionals Legislation.
  • Maintainseffective working relationships with Health Unit staff, and personnel ofother community agencies and volunteers.
  • Recommendsto Clinical Services Management, the purchase of equipment, supplies andmaterials as necessary for immunization programs.
  • Usestime, physical facilities, supplies equipment and other resourcesappropriately and effectively and provides appropriate documentation asrequired.
Program
  • Usesclinical nursing skills as required by clinic assignments.
  • Developsand maintains current knowledge of immunization to include knowledge ofvaccines; understanding of MOHLTC immunization programs; legislation;vaccine management requirements; vaccination schedules; precautions andcontra-indications; recognition and management of adverse events followingimmunization.
  • FollowsHealth Unit policy for all components of Clinical Services Divisionprograms including handling of vaccines, sharps and other biohazards.
  • Participatesin the planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of a varietyof immunization clinics.
  • FollowsHealth Unit and division medical directives, policies and procedures.
  • Participatesin the implementation of the emergency preparedness and response plan asassigned.
  • Participatesin continuous quality improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Complieswith the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee’s relevant bestpractice documents.
Physical
  • Worksin a safe manner as required by Occupational Health and Safetylegislation.
  • Performswork in an environment with occasional exposure to major disagreeableconditions or hazards.
  • Doeslight physical activity of long duration and medium physical activity ofintermediate duration.
  • Performswork involving almost continuous periods of mental, visual and/or auditoryconcentration of intermediate duration and/or frequent periods of longduration.
  • Detectsand works toward eliminating health hazards in all assigned areas.
Qualifications
1. Education
  • Successful completion of a Registered Practical Nurses Diploma program
  • Education program for immunization competencies is an asset
  • Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
2. Experience
  • Clinical experience administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
  • Excellent oral, written communication and computer skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational skills
3. Other
  • Proofof current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Proficiencyin the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the role of PublicHealth, Front Line Provider as defined by the CoreCompetencies for Public Health in Canada
  • Workingknowledge of the Ontario Public Health Standards, particularly in relationto Vaccine Preventable Diseases
  • ValidOntario driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Currentand satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Proofof immunizations required by LPH
  • Satisfactorycompletion of probationary period (equivalent of 3 months ONA contract)
  • CurrentCPR and First Aid (HCP level) or willingness to be certified at this levelwithin two months of hire
