The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is pleased to announce they are searching for Casual Animal Shelter Attendant to join their dedicated team. This position offers a competitive hourly rate ranging from $28.87/hr to $33.15/hr.

Purpose Statement:

The Casual Animal Shelter Attendant is a junior position providing weekend, vacation, and sick day coverage for the Thornhill Animal Shelter. The position is primarily responsible for cleaning and sanitizing the facilities, care and keeping of impounded animals, and extended duties such as answering phones, responding to minor inquiries, and taking messages as required. Reporting to the Director of Development Services and with guidance from the Animal Control Officer Supervisor, the attendant will follow shelter procedures as they fulfil their duties with minimal supervision.

None.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the regular cleaning & sanitizing of the Thornhill Animal Shelter facility, including indoor and outdoor enclosures;
  • Feed, monitor, and care for domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats;
  • Handling and administering medication to animals including those that may be defined as fearful, dangerous, or aggressive;
  • Perform clerical duties including but not limited to answering calls, responding to minor inquiries, and recording messages;
  • Some cleaning may be required at the Community Center during weekday shifts;
  • Assist other staff with their duties, and perform other related duties as required.

Working with others:

Assisting other Thornhill Animal Shelter staff and collaborating with staff from other departments as necessary, providing service to the public.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the principles, methods and equipment related to the care and handling of domestic animals, mainly dogs and cats;
  • Ability to work flexible daytime hours including weekends and statutory holidays;
  • Courteous and professional customer service;
  • Effective verbal and written communication;
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm while managing conflict;
  • Physical condition sufficient to remain standing for extended periods, bend down, crouch, or squat while interacting with animals, restrain, control, and load large dogs into vehicles and lift heavy objects from time to time;
  • Adapt to frequent interruptions and adjust task priorities as needed.

Specific Training and Experience:

  • Minimum Training and Experience:
  • Demonstrated customer service experience.
  • Experience related to the care and handling of dogs and other animals.
  • Preferred Training and Experience:
  • Courses in animal behaviour, animal welfare, or a related field.

Financial Responsibilities:

None.

Work Environment:

Most of the work is conducted at the Thornhill Animal Shelter, which includes cleaning and maintaining shelter facilities and caring for the animals.

Physical, Mental and Visual Demands

  • Noise and odors associated with the care and keeping of animals;
  • Careful handling of hazardous materials including cleaning agents and animal waste;
  • Contact with and handling of animals exhibiting fearful or aggressive behaviour, animals in medical or emotional distress, or deceased animals;
  • Encounters with members of the public experiencing distress.

Licenses/Certifications

A current and valid BC Driver’s License would be an asset but is not required.
