Cashier

Island Home Hardware is hiring a cashier for its Grand Manan, NB location. The position is a permanent, full‑time role with a starting salary of $15.65 to $18.50 per hour (to be negotiated), working 30 to 44 hours per week. It requires on‑site presence; remote work is not available.

Job Summary

As a cashier, you will operate the cash register, process money, cheques and credit/debit card payments, scan items, calculate total payments, and reconcile daily sales totals. Additional duties include suggesting products, stocking shelves, cleaning the counter area, greeting customers, wrapping merchandise, providing customer service, calculating foreign‑currency exchange, monitoring entrances and exits, participating in promotional activities, and verifying age for lottery tickets, alcohol, and tobacco sales. You will also use electronic cash registers and inventory systems and undergo a criminal record check.

Responsibilities
  • Operate cash register and process all forms of payment.
  • Scan items and tally total payments.
  • Reconcile daily and shift sales with the system.
  • Suggest product purchases to customers.
  • Stock shelves and maintain a clean counter area.
  • Greet customers and provide friendly service.
  • Wrap or bag merchandise as requested.
  • Calculate foreign‑currency exchange rates.
  • Monitor entrances and exits, request proof of payment when required.
  • Participate in promotional and in‑store activities.
  • Verify customer age for lottery, alcohol, and tobacco sales.
Requirements
  • High‑school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 to < 7 months of cashier or retail experience.
  • Valid Canadian work authorization.
  • Valid driver's licence and own transportation.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with cash‑register systems.
  • Excellent oral communication and a team‑player attitude.
