Canadian Indirect Tax Manager

Role Description

Reporting to the Director, Global Tax, the Canadian Indirect Tax Manager is a key member of the Tax Team and plays a crucial role in ensuring indirect tax compliance with evolving tax laws and regulations. The Canadian Indirect Tax Manager is primarily responsible for leading Canadian Indirect Taxation & Levies, Tax Recoveries, and Tax Incentives initiatives. This includes overseeing the delivery of indirect tax compliance and tax accounting, managing indirect tax audit defense, and driving indirect tax planning strategies. The role also encompasses responsibility for the oversight of internal controls and tax-related systems to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance. A key focus is delivering excellent service to both internal and external stakeholders, fostering strong relationships and ensuring timely, value-added support across the organization.

Core Responsibilities
Canadian Indirect Tax & Levies
  • Reviews monthly and quarterly GST/HST, QST, and PST returns.
  • Reviews monthly, quarterly, and annual provincial tire levy returns.
  • Addresses indirect tax related enquiries from Kal Tire Stores and other internal departments.
  • Reviews new account set up for accuracy and completeness of tax information received.
  • Reviews and approves customer tax exemptions as applicable.
  • Reviews Monthly and Quarterly tax reconciliations for relevant taxes accounts, recovery of taxes on written-off accounts, and self-assessment of taxes on consumable items.
  • Reviews adjustments made to sales tax returns for bad debts (minimum annually).
Tax Incentives
  • Review and apply for sales tax rebates (e.g., software).
  • Research and support to avoid payment of unnecessary sales tax.
  • Research, prepare and file scientific research and experimental development claims and/or assist external advisors with claims as needed.
  • Assist with research and review of various potential Canadian tax incentives.
Tax Planning
  • Supports the preparation of tax memos and slide decks for Canadian tax planning initiatives.
  • Advises on indirect tax considerations of business transactions, mergers, and acquisitions.
  • Assists with various tax planning initiatives.
  • Conducts and reviews ad hoc Canadian tax research as needed.
Audit Defense
  • Drafts responses to Canadian indirect tax audit requests.
  • Liaises with external advisors throughout the audit, as needed.
  • Contributes to an open, transparent and collaborative dialogue during tax audits to foster good working relationships with tax authorities.
  • Is professional, courteous, and responsive in interactions with Canadian tax authorities.
Internal Controls & Systems
  • Assists in determining the operational effectiveness of new and existing processes.
  • Identifies areas within the business that may be susceptible to tax risk.
  • Proposes process changes to close gaps identified, account for changes to the business, or account for changes in legislation as required.
  • Seeks to automate or streamline business processes, particularly to tax compliance, and collaborate with other business units to achieve identified improvements.
Service
  • Provides service-oriented, responsive communication to other areas of the business.
  • Works collaboratively with other team members and develops and maintains effective working relationships across the business.
  • Consults with other business units and effectively communicates tax related issues.
Administration
  • Champions global indirect tax compliance workflow platform and ensures timely submission of all indirect tax deliverables.
  • Handles the set up of any new Canadian tax accounts including online access, authorizations and direct deposit.

  • Excellent understanding of Canadian tax legislation and reporting requirements.

Your Toolkit
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in Canadian Indirect Tax
  • CPA designation or other relevant professional designation
  • Completed of CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian tax legislation
  • Proven ability to manage indirect tax issues, audits, and tax planning
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in a large, fast-paced organization
  • French speaking, an asset
Special Requirements
  • Flexible schedule required to accommodate periodic times of increased workload.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Overtime as required
