Job summary

YMCA of Northeastern Ontario's John Island Camp in Spanish, ON, is seeking a dedicated Camper Care Manager. This is a full-time contract role focusing on the emotional health and well-being of campers, working with the Wellness Manager and supervising the Counselling Team.

The role includes 48-hour camper check-ins, communication with parents, daily cabin care, and coordination with the Program Manager. Start date May 1, 2026; pay rate $18.00–$19.50 hourly.

Qualifications

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma is an asset; applicants with education outside Canada must submit a WES report.
• Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification.
• Experience providing emotional support and care to children or youth in camp or residential settings.
• Experience conducting performance management with direct reports.
• Supervisory experience managing a team in a program or camp environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
• Knowledge of CQRP and OCA programs is an asset.
• Mental Health First Aid certification is considered an asset.
• National Lifeguard Service (NLS) certification is considered an asset.
• Minimum two years’ experience in a senior camp or outdoor centre role.
• Minimum three to four years’ experience working at summer camps or outdoor centres.
• Bilingualism in both official languages is an asset.
• Current and satisfactory Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Job description

We are currently looking for a Camper Care Manager to join our team of committed professionals. This Full-time Contract position within the Association is housed at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario’s John Island Camp location near Spanish, ON.

Under the leadership of the Director of John Island Camp, the Camper Care Manager is responsible for the emotional health and well-being of all campers. They work alongside the Wellness Manager to provide care to campers and staff, supervise the Counselling Team Leads, and, together with the Program Manager, oversee the Counselling Team. The Camper Care Manager consults with parents or guardians as needed, conducts 48-hour camper check-ins, ensures daily cabin cleanliness, and manages the laundry of soiled camper items.

START DATE: May 1, 2026
LOCATION: YMCA John Island
RATE OF PAY: $18.00-$19.50

CAMP EQUITABLE EMPLOYMENT FUND

The Camp Equitable Employment Fund (CEEF) is a grant created to reduce barriers to camp employment for individuals who have been historically marginalized and underrepresented in the camping industry.

The fund is open to Canadians, ages 18 to 25, who are a part of a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) communities. Ideal candidates will have previous experience, or a demonstrated interest, in working with youth. Camp-specific experience is not required.

Successful applicants will receive financial assistance to offset the personal expenses of working in the outdoor industry. This could include: certification courses, personal gear, equipment and travel costs.
