Job description

Indigenous Nations and Peoples

Position

Campaign Organizer

Organization

RAVEN

Location

The position is fully remote but the applicant will need to live in Edmonton, Alberta

Overview Of Position

The Campaign Organizer will foster RAVEN’s movement for specific partnered Nations in Edmonton. The position is vital for supporting the two partnered Nations – Beaver Lake Cree Nation and Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation – with their campaigns through RAVEN. The contract position will not only support the Nations, but it will support the Campaigns Department with administration, project management, and volunteer coordination, specifically in Edmonton. The position could be slightly amended to accommodate specific knowledge, skills, and experience that the contractor may have. This role will include regular travel within and possibly outside of Edmonton, where contractors live, making vehicle access and a Class 5 driver’s license an asset for the position.

Responsibilities
  • Lead small-scale fundraising events of the Organizer’s choosing (with approval) on a quarterly basis. This includes internal proposals for RAVEN to approve, project managing approved events with support from the Campaigns Manager, and executing the event.
  • Develop a list of events to table at. This includes outreach to event organizers and managing materials to bring to events after RAVEN’s approval. Attendance at events is likely, but there may be coordination of volunteers to fulfill attendance if necessary.
  • Develop a list of public spaces to then drop off campaign materials while fostering relationships. Public spaces may include universities, libraries, and coffee shops, depending on the area and the desires of the Organizer, the Campaigns Manager, and the Campaigns Director. This will include administrative tracking of materials and travelling to those locations to re-supply any materials on an as-needed basis.
  • At the direction of the Campaigns Manager, coordinate with volunteers to assist with hosting and attending events for tabling purposes. This may include sharing knowledge and resources about assigned campaigns with volunteers to assist with movement-building and conversations.
  • Inform the Campaigns department of specific campaign strategies that will aid partnered Nations. This will include review and consultation around campaign strategies the Campaigns Manager and Director develop, further aligning with best practices, activities, and ideas through collaboration and local knowledge.
  • Respond to partnered Nations’ legal case activities and attend Nation-led events at the direction of the Campaigns Manager. This may involve attending court hearings to meet with leadership and take notes at the hearing for the partnered Nation and RAVEN’s Communications team. It may also involve travelling to events the Nation is speaking at or hosting themselves to further foster relationships with that Nation.
  • Identify, build, and foster relationships with local leaders, NGO partners, and RAVEN supporters. This could include attending other events, collaborating with partners on hosted events/tabling, or meeting with people to discuss RAVEN’s work.
  • Provide materials for RAVEN’s Communications team to adequately update the entire RAVEN community. This could include written, photo, and/or video materials taken throughout campaign activities.
  • Attend internal meetings, particularly quarterly meetings with partnered Nations, to take notes, receive updates, and inform conversations.
  • Assist the Campaigns Manager with the administration of assigned campaigns, which includes administering legal disbursements, filing internal documents, taking meeting notes, and tracking campaign materials.
  • Other duties as appropriately assigned by the Campaigns Manager and negotiated based on the Organizer’s specific knowledge and skills.
Experience And Skills
  • At least three years of grassroots organizing experience. We recognize that organizing comes in different shapes and forms that may not always be recognized by colonial systems, so we are open to what this means for the applying person.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Nations and Peoples in multiple contexts. There should be strong knowledge of the TRC Calls to Action, Constitutional rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and Indigenous legal systems and knowledge, with a keenness to learn more, especially as it pertains to assigned campaigns.
  • Engagement experience with local, provincial, and national NGOs, networks, and coalitions. This particularly includes collaborating and sharing resources with such groups to better achieve advocacy goals.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills. Past experience of public speaking, speaking on behalf of organizations, and conversations in professional contexts are strong assets.
  • Strong administration skills are necessary for the role, including experience with Google Workspace, Asana, Microsoft 365, and Salesforce.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
Equipment Needed for Position
  • This position is fully remote, and RAVEN uses a wide variety of software (Asana, Slack, Google Workplace). This requires the contractor to have their own secure computer and phone.
  • Ownership of a vehicle with a class 5 driver’s license is a strong asset for the position. All travel expenses will be covered.
Compensation
  • $35/hour for a maximum of 25 hours per week. The contract period is one year in length with the possibility of extension.
