AVI Nanaimo Community Health Centre
Part‑time Addiction Medicine, HIV and family practice Physicians wanted

The AVI Nanaimo Community Health Centre (CHC) is looking for Addiction Medicine and/or Family Physicians to work within a multi‑disciplinary team providing low barrier, trauma‑informed health care to some of Nanaimo’s most vulnerable community members. AVI Nanaimo is located on Victoria Road, just outside of downtown.

Physicians will work in collaboration with nurses, care coordinators, system navigators, support workers, educators, peer support workers and counsellors to provide wrap‑around supports and holistic care.

AVI aims to address the health inequities faced by people who experience substance use and mental health challenges, people living with and at‑risk of HIV, HCV and other blood‑borne illnesses, people who are unstably housed, those who are Indigenous, from racialised groups, who are gender‑diverse and part of the 2S/LGBTQ+ community.

AVI also provides a Prescribed Alternatives program offering primarily witnessed fentanyl options along with other medications for people at significant risk of drug poisoning. The program has been operating since 2021 and has demonstrated positive outcomes on the health and wellbeing of participants. The program integrates with our addiction medicine/OAT practice and participants can move seamlessly between the programmes depending on need and acuity.

We are looking for physicians who can provide one or more of the following services, dependent on individual preference:

  • Assessment and provision of Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT)
  • Assessment and prescribing of witnessed fentanyl options and injectable OAT for participants of AVI’s Prescribed Alternatives program in line with established protocols and policies
  • Primary care for People living with HIV
  • Screening and Assessment of STI’s and viral blood‑borne illnesses
  • Assessment and prescribing of Pre‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for patients to manage risk of HIV
  • Other primary care for acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Clinical Management of HIV course is an asset

Billing for MSP and MPRSD is handled by clinic staff and patient volumes are set in collaboration with the physician.

Details

Start Date: Starting as soon as possible.

Shift/Hours of Work: 4 or 8 hour shifts Monday‑Sunday between 9:00am and 5:00pm for the equivalent of 30 hours/week.

Remuneration: $195/hour
