Job description

Our Building Specialty Services group is seeking a Building Science Engineer to join our team in Burnaby, BC. This role provides technical and business leadership to advance building science practices and support our clients through innovative, sustainable solutions.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • This role is one of technical and business leadership involved with many aspects of our team’s daily work, including building envelope design, 3rd‑party design review, envelope commissioning, and construction services for both rehabilitation and new construction projects.
  • Lead the service line from a business perspective within the Building Specialty Services Business Unit.
  • Define the scope of complex services and establish design criteria for projects.
  • Review design documents, shop drawings, and trade submittals for conformance with best building practices related to water intrusion, air leakage, vapor diffusion, thermal performance, and differential movement.
  • Manage the preparation of contract drawings and specifications with project teams.
  • Conduct field reviews of new construction and rehabilitation projects to confirm envelope assemblies are built according to mock‑ups and design documents.
  • Prepare and review site visit reports, generate action lists of outstanding deficiencies, and track their resolution.
  • Perform field testing of selected envelope elements to verify compliance with water infiltration and air leakage performance standards and prepare test reports.
  • Investigate and resolve unusual project problems by applying innovative solutions.
  • Interface with architects, general contractors, and sub‑trades; provide expert advice on design processes or construction methods.
  • Conduct forensic analyses of envelope failures and present findings to stakeholders, including legal professionals, contractors, and consultants.
  • Lead and manage direct reports and project teams ranging from one to five staff members, driving results on time and on budget.
  • Serve as technical lead and project manager on assigned projects, conduct building science research, and mentor staff.
  • Provide technical presentations and thought leadership within the building science community, both internally at Stantec and externally.
  • Write proposals for new work and lead business development opportunities to drive new business with internal and external clients.
  • Mentor and train entry‑level staff in technical and non‑technical skills.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam, CAD, and/or Revit.
  • Project management skills to handle multiple concurrent projects with budgets above $200,000.
  • Practical knowledge of energy code, rain‑screen principles, air barriers, and thermal performance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with a strong customer service commitment.
  • Position requires weekly regional travel.
  • Must be able to work on active construction sites.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean motor‑vehicle record.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia (P.Eng).
Education and Experience
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in assessing, detailing, testing, or constructing building envelope systems.
  • Strong understanding of advanced flashing, waterproofing, roofing, cladding, rain screens, air barriers, and related systems.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Science, with a background in Building Science.
Pay Range
  • Locations in Lower Mainland, BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario – $94,600.00 – $137,100.00 annually.
