Job summary

The City of Burlington is seeking a Building Inspector to ensure construction complies with the Ontario Building Code and related regulations. The role reports to the Supervisor, Building Inspections and involves inspecting projects at selected stages and preventing unauthorized work.

Applicants must hold a CBCO designation or be eligible, possess the required Ontario Building Code qualifications, and demonstrate strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • You have a degree or diploma in Architectural, Civic Engineering, or Construction (or equivalent) and a minimum of three (3) years’ municipal building inspection experience or five (5) years in related field.
  • CBCO designation is required and eligibility for PEO, OACETT or OBOA is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, CSA and NFPA standards; proficient written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect construction in all building types to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and Building Code Act.
  • Policing and enforcing the Building Code, issuing Orders to comply or Stop Work Orders as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and evidence; prepare prosecution briefs for court testimony.
  • Provide on-site problem solving to achieve design compliance, collaborating with City Legal as required.
