Job summary

Canadian National Railway Company is seeking a Bridges & Structures Bridgetender for a seasonal role from April 2027 to October 2027. The position focuses on maintaining safe, continuous operations of bridges and coordinating marine traffic with rail transit.

Training is provided and safety is the top priority. The Bridgetender role involves indoors control-room work during shifts and outdoor duties at bridges, with responsibilities including signaling, traffic coordination, and emergency

Qualifications

  • Capable of climbing and working at heights with fall protection.
  • Must have a Driving Licence Class 5.
  • Must be qualified to operate the moveable span of Bridges and related equipment.
  • Basic computer skills and good verbal, reading, and writing communication.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble and erect timber, concrete and steel bridge components.
  • Coordinate opening of bridges to transit marine traffic.
  • Direct movements of vessels and trains on bridges or bridge areas using signals and communication gear.
  • Initiate emergency procedures in case of accidents and assist in related safety operations.

Job Summary

The Bridgetender isa safety sensitive position thatensures continuous daily operations of bridges. The roleisresponsible forcontrolling Marine traffic and Rail Traffic coordinatingopening of bridges to transit marine traffic. Closing bridges to run railtraffic, timing and communication is a key part of this position. Safety alwayscomes first at CN.

Major Responsibilities
  • Fabrication, assembly and erection of timber, concrete and steel railway bridge components
  • Use of variousspecialized hand tools and air, hydraulic and electric tools
  • Regular lawn mowing and maintenance
  • Preparation and minormaintenance of tools for assigned work
  • Removal and replacementof defective bridge, culvert and other structural components
  • Organize and directmovements of vessels transiting waterways and trains on bridges or bridgeareas, using signals and telecommunication equipment
  • Initiate emergencyprocedures in case of accident (e.g.,police, ambulance, andtowing)andparticipatein road cleaning operations in caseof accident
Working Conditions
  • Maintenance role isprimarily performed outdoors invarious typesof weather, noiseand environmental conditions
  • Bridge Tender role isprimarily indoors in a bridge tender control room
  • The role is stationaryand is limited to the Sault Ste Marie Swing Bridge operations only
  • The incumbent has avariable schedule; daytime & night Shifts Tue-Sat with days off on Sun/Mon
Requirements
  • Capable of climbing andworking at heights using fall protection equipment
  • Must haveaDrivingLicence Class 5
  • Must be qualified tooperate the moveable span of Bridges and all duties associated with themovement or rail and marine traffic transiting the bridge
  • Will be required toobtain valid USOR US Engineering Rules Card
  • Must have theskills,knowledge,andphysical capacitytooperateall the equipment and tools
  • Must be abletooperatea tractor, a lawn mower, brushcutterandtrimmer
  • Must be able toinitiatetheemergency procedureestablishedfollowing a situation whereexternal needs are necessary (e.g.,ambulance, police, firefighters,coast guard)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Good verbal, readingcomprehension and writing skills
  • Capable of workingvarious shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays

Training

The incumbent will receive paid, formal classroom and on-the-job training.
