Qualifications

Reports To: The Management Team

Hours: This position is casual April to August and then progressively more hours from September to December leading into the on snow season. For the right candidate we are willing to design a schedule that works to accommodate the scheduling needs of the applicant.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and certifications and will depend on the time commitment applicant is able to offer.

Position Overview

The role of the Head Coach is one that demands dedication, hard work, creativity, group control, and an enthusiastic attitude towards children and sport. The Head Coach is required to oversee and train all staff, promote continuous learning with all athletes and staff, create program curriculum, oversee & lead in setting training/drill courses, and stay current on coaching updates from CSCF, AOA & ACA.

The Head Coach works directly with the Management Team, Assistant Head Coaches, U team and RD coaches, athletes and parents within the program focusing on promoting fundamental/intermediate and advanced skills of athletes and fostering a love of the sport. The Head Coach is expected to guide and challenge coaches to teach classes that are age appropriate, challenging, productive, fun and are capable of teaching athletes the safety requirements of the program and race courses ensuring that all participants use equipment properly and follow safety standards.

In coordination with other managers, the Head Coach is expected to manage along with the Assistant Head Coaches open / close the race building and be present for the duration of most race programs. The Head Coach will work with the Management team to develop and coordinate all racing programs and will maintain a high level of communication and transparency when doing so. The Head Coach will also liaise with other partners such as Ski Patrol and Track 3 programming as needed. Boler Mountain values Safe Sport for all involved in ski racing. The Head Coach is expected to have completed all Safe Sport Training modules, Respect in Sport Modules, and will uphold the values of Safe Sport in all aspects of role.

Job Duties

• Hire and train coaching staff
• Assign coaching staff to applicable teams based on registration numbers.
• Assess and approve vacation requests by staff.
• Facilitate all pre-season meetings and staff training.
• Plan and facilitate all staff training sessions during the season promoting continual development.
• Mentor all newly certified Entry Level coaches.
• Arrive (or coordinate arrival with Assistant Head Coaches) a minimum of 30 minutes prior to program start time or earlier to open building, plan, prepare, and implement daily activities (indoor/outdoor) as they relate to the curriculum (ie. course setting, indoor dryland, etc.).
• Create and post schedule for hill time and courses for all teams and coaching staff.
• Create and post age and skill appropriate program curriculum with onsite equipment that encourages movement and strength of lower joints used in Alpine Skiing.
• Set or mentor, guide and assist coaches in setting their training courses.
• Monitor all training courses for safety and ensure terrain is properly maintained.
• Proof and provide guidance to all lesson plans.
• Oversee and execute all AOA races with other managers specifically in relation to equipment management, course setting/hill requirements/maintenance & regulations, running Jury meetings, overseeing timing, and any on hill tasks.
• General understanding of CSCF and AOA organizational structure, member requirements and programs.
• Represent Boler Mountain at AOA meetings (e.g. SOD and Coaches Conference)
• Ensure that all athlete progress reports are completed by coaches.
• Assist in coordinating end of year Awards Banquet for U10-U18 athletes
• Wear a helmet at all times while on-hill.
• Record necessary information pertinent to each child or staff member.
• Handle any and all staff issues with assistance from the Management Team.
• Handle any athlete issues that have been escalated for discipline.
• Ensure all risk management protocols are followed and manage injuries as needed in coordination with Ski Patrol.
• Maintain equipment and assist in housekeeping duties to keep building clean on a weekly basis.
• Work with staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
• Maintain adherence to all organizational policies and procedures, including safety requirements.
• Maintain attendance records of staff and volunteers.
• Monitor all equipment signed out by staff and ensure it is accounted for at the end of each day.
• Assist with other duties as requested.
• Report on the state of affairs and program status to Management
• Update (as needed) and ensure compliance with Employee Handbook.

Requirements

• Minimum Entry Level Advanced Certified Status (or near completion)
• Entry Level Mentor Certification would be an asset.
• Past experience with race course setting both GS and SL courses.
• Strong overall knowledge of biomechanics relating to Alpine Skiing and ability to apply knowledge into program planning.
• Minimum of 3 years past coaching experience as a coach of a Race Team (U10-U18 preferred).
