Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in Canada is seeking a dedicated Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) for the Specimen Reception area. Candidates must have relevant educational qualifications, including 3 Highers at Grade C or above, and experience in a medical laboratory reception. Responsibilities include processing samples and ensuring correct specimen management. This is a full-time role with a Monday to Friday work schedule from 09:00 to 17:00, offering a fantastic opportunity to contribute to patient care.

Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post: Monday – Friday, 37 hours per week covering 09:00 – 17:00.

As the largest Immunology and Neuroimmunology department in Scotland with regard to workload and range of tests undertaken, we provide a highly specialised, technical, scientific laboratory and clinical service to support the care of patients.

A vacancy has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) position within the Specimen Reception area, where you will carry out technical, administrative and clerical tasks. Effective operation of the sample reception area is essential to the operation of the Department.

Essential Qualifications
  • 3 Highers at Grade C or above, which should include either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths
  • SVQ3 in relevant science subject
  • Completion of modern apprenticeship in life sciences
  • Completion of equivalent accredited education / learning

It is essential that candidates have experience of working in a medical laboratory reception.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process samples through specimen reception by preparing samples for analysis (including centrifugation) and safe disposal of clinical waste following defined protocols.
  • Book in specimens (PID) on laboratory Information System (Telepath) using bar‑code readers and keyboard entry and file request forms.
  • Ensure correct storage and retrieval of samples.
