Job summary

Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is seeking a Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) to safely and efficiently move trains and protect on-track equipment on their assigned territory. This safety-critical position requires vigilance, adherence to rules, and quick decision-making in emergencies.

The role offers exposure to a 24/7 operation, with training of 5–6 months and a probationary period, and requires fluency in English and French and strong computer and math skills.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) is a Safety Critical Position that is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trains and engines and the protection of on-track equipment and personnel as required on their assigned territory.

Key responsibilities

• Must be proficient in all rules (Canadian Rail Operating Rules), regulations and procedures governing railway operations under their control.
• Required to ensure on-track forces receive the maximum available time to perform maintenance work and inspections while avoiding delay to scheduled train movements.
• Must manage emergencies and other unexpected events ensuring primarily that the safety of the employees and public is protected while at the same time limiting the impact to railway operations.
• Required to maintain concise records and enter reports via various software applications.

Training

Successful candidates will undergo a lengthy training program (approximately 5 to 6 months) involving classroom and practical instruction. Candidates will be subject to a probationary period of 130 shifts.

Work location & Schedule

The Rail Traffic Controller Centre is a 24/7 operation. Candidates must be willing and able to work any shift (day, evening, night), weekends and holidays.
