Job description
Overview

MEC is expanding! Join us on this new adventure as we’re opening a new store in Nanaimo for December 2025.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to work with one of Canada’s most iconic outdoor retailers, we’ve got your dream job.

MEC is more than a store. We’re a hub for the outdoor community, a leader in sustainability, and a place where you can be yourself. People come to us to try new things and plan new adventures, and as a Bike Mechanic/Technician you’ll be there to help make it all happen. Members (customers) visit us for gear and advice on hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, watersports, snowsports and travel. You’ll chat with people who are planning everything from dream trips to weekend getaways, from first‑timers to outdoor experts.

You’ll also have some pretty incredible coworkers who might just become future activity buddies. The overwhelming answer was “the people.”

Role

As a Bike Mechanic/Technician, you will assemble, maintain and repair bicycles within MEC’s productivity, quality and safety guidelines. Mentor and train frontline staff about bike repair processes and procedures. All repairs are performed with MEC sustainability principles in mind. In the winter, bike mechanics help in our ski shop, so you’ll also install, adjust and repair ski bindings and skis.

You help members get great gear, with the industry‑leading advice they need to feel inspired about their activity. You work behind the scenes and on the frontline to organize inventory and get members the products they need.

You talk with members about our products. You have in-depth knowledge and love sharing personal recommendations. You have an affinity for helping people of all skill levels find the right product.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide member service according to SERVE standard, in shop/sales floor as required.
  • Keep the working space organized, safe, clean, and efficient.
  • Assemble bicycles within MEC standards.
  • Complete basic repairs, including wheel truing, internal cable routing, drive train adjustment, bottom bracket and headset selection and installation, all within quality guidelines and time standards established by MEC.
  • Install and maintain all parts related to the proper function of a bicycle.
  • Install and maintain bike accessories such as fenders, racks, bottle cages.
  • Diagnose issues related to bicycle function and suggest solutions.
  • Ensure the final inspection and quality assurance of new and repaired bikes meets or exceeds MEC standards.
  • Fulfill necessary documentation and perform other administrative duties according to MEC standards.
  • Excellent written communication skills for booking bicycles for mechanical work.
  • Sourcing parts as per MEC standards for work orders.
  • Inventory management and data entry.
  • Track hours worked within each function of bike shop.
  • Maintain MEC specified productivity standards.
  • Adhere to all loss prevention policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned based on business needs.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year of work experience as a bicycle mechanic in a bicycle shop.
  • Availability as per MEC availability guideline based on status.
  • Demonstrate fluency in parts terminology, service techniques and parts compatibility.

  • Proficient computer skills utilizing D365 systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, push, and pull for extended periods of time.
