Job Summary
The Beach Development Coach is a key contributor to the OVA High Performance Beach Plan, with a primary focus on supporting athletes transitioning from the Train to Train stage to the Train to Compete stage of Long‑Term Development. This role leads the year‑round training of targeted athletes, including the full‑time training group in both winter and summer and integrated athletes balancing indoor and beach programs.
The coach provides direct support to athletes in the Targeted Athlete Program, mentors Team Ontario Beach coaches, and represents Ontario by coaching athletes at international events such as FIVB Age Group World Championships and Continental Championships. Working closely with the Manager of Coach Culture and Beach Development, who oversees the next stage transition from Learn to Compete to Train to Compete, the Beach Development Coach ensures a seamless development pathway for Ontario athletes while modeling evidence‑based, inquiry‑driven coaching practices.
Key Responsibilities
This role combines athlete development, coach leadership and talent identification while also managing the day‑to‑day administrative tasks expected in a provincial sport organization.
Train to Train Athlete Development
- Coach and monitor targeted Train to Train and Learn to Compete athletes year‑round, applying evidence‑based, inquiry‑driven methods to advance their development.
- Deliver individualized training plans, maintain athlete profiles, and produce monitoring reports to track progress.
- Foster holistic development of Team Ontario athletes by ensuring continuity in training, communication, and athlete support, including regular meetings and education on high‑performance habits.
- Collaborate with integrated support team members (e.g., physiotherapist, strength & conditioning coach, nutritionist, mental performance coach) to optimize athlete performance through sport science and sport medicine.
- Support targeted athletes in provincial competition at OVA Beach Tour events and prepare them for international highlight events such as world championship trials, continental championships, and FIVB age‑group world championships.
- Plan, organize, and deliver athlete training camps, including March Break beach camps and Team Ontario summer camps.
- Ensure the execution and development of all programming complies with UCCMS.
Athlete Identification & Recruitment
- Develop and apply clear criteria for athlete selection, identification, and evaluation processes within Team Ontario Beach programs.
- Lead the OVA athlete identification process, including planning and delivering Team Ontario Beach tryouts.
- Implement strategies to recruit and identify beach athletes across all regions and development levels, aligned to both the beach athlete development pathway and the integrated beach–indoor pathway.
- Utilize drop‑in sessions, “indoor on the beach” programming, and King/Queen of the Beach events during winter training to identify emerging talent.
- Expand access and reach by establishing new programming in London, strengthening opportunities for high‑performance beach athletes.
- Collaborate with the communications team to ensure outward messaging reflects the purpose, values, and objectives of the Team Ontario Beach program, supporting recruitment and storytelling.
- Support coaches in the development of yearly training and competition plans, as well as athlete evaluation tools.
- Align the broader coaching team with seasonal plans to ensure continuity of practice and consistent athlete experiences across programs.
- Enhance overall coaching quality by fostering collaboration, modeling evidence‑based approaches, and sharing best practices within the OVA beach athlete development pathway.
- Organize and support coaches delivering drop‑in programs, Tall Maples camps, and Team Ontario Beach camps.
- Strengthen program reach by mentoring coaches involved in new programming at the London facility, ensuring a consistent standard of athlete support across regions.
Administration & Other
- Administer the beach program budget, track expenses, and manage scheduling to achieve the goals and objectives of the beach operational plan.
- Work with the Athlete Development Coordinator to plan, coordinate, and deliver Team Ontario integrated programs.
- Oversee the organization of the full‑time training group, March Break camps, and summer Team Ontario beach programs.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the Beach High Performance Plan, including reporting on athlete progress for Quest for Gold (Q4G), OHPSI, and other funding or program requirements.
- Complete organizational and administrative tasks, as well as other responsibilities assigned by the OVA.
- Act as a liaison between program committees as required
- Respond to members inquiries in a timely manner
- Serve as an OVA ambassador
Qualifications
- College or university degree, or Advanced Coaching Diploma.
- Minimum NCCP Beach Advanced Development Coach certification (or equivalent).
- In‑depth understanding of the Canadian Long‑Term Athlete Development model and its application to volleyball.
- At least three years of high‑performance beach coaching experience, including international coaching exposure.
- Demonstrated success in developing high‑performance athletes and mentoring coaches.
- Meets OVA Coach Eligibility requirements: up‑to‑date screening (Level 2 Criminal Record & Judicial
- Matters Check or E‑PIC, Screening Disclosure Form) and completion of mandatory training modules (Making Head Way, Safe Sport Training, NCCP Anti‑Racism in Coaching, Foundations of Volleyball, Making Ethical Decisions evaluation).
- Strong understanding of athlete development principles, high‑performance environments, and evidence‑based coaching practices (experience with Provincial Team or National Team beach environments an asset)
- Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, with a customer‑service mindset.
- Proactive, reliable, and solutions‑oriented; able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and database management.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including regular weekend and extended hours during competition phases.
- Willingness to travel; valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle required.
