The College is currently seeking a dynamic and competent individual for the position of Basic Skills' Education Workshop Teacher/Instructor at Dorchester Penitentiary. Employment Type: Casual

Salary Range: $33.85 to $52.08 per hour, based on experience and level of post-secondary education.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Education Degree (OR) a Teacher's College Diploma AND a valid New Brunswick Teacher's Certificate AND a Diploma in Carpentry (Red Seal) OR Diploma in Carpentry (Red Seal) AND an Adult Education Certificate.
  • Must have valid WHMIS and Basic First Aid training.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with at least one (1) year of related, recent work experience.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working in a post-secondary environment.
  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, bilingual would be considered an asset.

  • Highly flexible with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to navigate and build relationships effectively throughout the organization.
  • Experience with adult education and correctional facilities is highly valued.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

As part of the School of Professional and Part-time Learning, collaborating with and reporting to the Business Development Operations Manager, you are responsible for:

  • Delivering individualized instruction and adapting teaching strategies to meet diverse academic needs.
  • Teaching employability skills and fostering self-confidence through realistic, measurable goals.
  • Supporting students in recognizing their abilities and limitations to promote safe learning practices.
  • Providing hands-on training in basic tool use and entry-level trades (e.g., woodwork, bicycle repair).
  • Creating a dynamic workshop environment that encourages personal growth and barrier reduction.
  • Maintaining strict inventory control and enforcing security protocols for tools, materials, and assets.
  • Collaborating with case management teams, CSC staff, and community organizations on program delivery.
  • Conducting safety checks, submitting observation reports, and upholding health and security standards.
  • Supervising student tutors and cleaners, ensuring compliance with CSC program guidelines.
  • Promoting cultural awareness through visual displays and presentations aligned with significant dates/months.
  • Building and sustaining professional relationships with students, colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders, as well as other related duties.
